April PSA Monthly Member Meeting
The meeting was held outside at Kathleen Swaydan's home/studio in Altadena. Topics of the general discussion included the upcoming 97th Annual Juried Exhibition at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank during the month of May. Questions answered included artwork drop-off days and information about the print bins and the sales boutiques featuring 3D art. There was an update on returning to the Blinn House in Pasadena for future PSA activities. Access to the Blinn House may start as early as May this year. This is exciting news!

The main activity of the meeting was a "critique" session. Suzanne Urquiza presented a landscape in progress with questions and a long discussion about the composition and the placement of a running figure.  There were lots of very positive statements and suggestions about how to easily resolve the figure placement concern.

Kathleen Swaydan presented two of her small-scale still lifes. The group really liked these paintings and had several questions about the objects in the still lifes. All was very interesting.

Shaney Watters presented two of her animal portraits. She expressed a desire to change the direction of her work by no longer covering the paintings with a gloss resin. These paintings featured the natural surface of the media used. Everyone supported the change in approach.

The entire critique session was enjoyed by all involved. It was suggested that critiques be part of most upcoming general meetings. After all, we are all artists and are there to help each other with these kinds of concerns.

Hi, Fellow Artists,

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
                                             Robert Breault

As I write this we are on the verge of May … it is probably not the first or last time this year that I have said this, but time seems to be flying by. And while there are so many difficult "big things" going on right now, I do feel that this is the time for me to really remain aware of the smaller, everyday things and dwell in gratitude for them. We had our second in-person member meeting and it was another delightful critique/feedback conversation. There is so much inspiration and richness that comes from everyone during our meetings. If you would like to get in on the goodness, we will be doing it again this month. Same day and time and please consider joining us. All you have to do is bring a piece you would like to discuss and your curiosity. A bonus is that Mims Ellis has rekindled her role as raffle queen so there will be fun prizes to be had.

This month we also have our wonderful 97th member show at Betsy Lueke and I have no doubt that it will be a fantastic showing of PSA work. I hope to see lots of you at the opening if able to make it. Larry and the exhibitions committee have been working tirelessly to put on a great showing for us and it shouldn’t be missed.

Please be well and healthy,

Shaney Watters

MAY MEMBER MEETING and Art Critique!

We started a new program at the March meeting of sharing our art and getting feedback from our member friends.

Are you stuck? Do you want friendly feedback about your work? Do you want to see work that other members are creating?  Do you want to connect with friends and make new ones? Do you want to talk about art? Then come to our May Meeting and Art Critique.

Don’t be alarmed by the word "critique." It does not mean critical, and we have one rule:
Comments must be articulate, kind and specific. Just saying “I like it” or “I don’t like it” isn’t allowed. What do you like? Is there a specific suggestion that would help the piece be stronger? What was your first impression of the work?
Here’s how it works:
•  Bring one artwork. It could be a work in progress, "almost" finished, or fully finished.

•  Participants will have five minutes to discuss their work:  their inspiration, their process, and any challenges they had/have with the piece.

•  The audience will have five minutes to respond with what they see, make suggestions, or offer comments.

•
Participants will be chosen at random – names drawn out of a basket.

•  The number of participants will be determined by how many show up and how much time we have. Those who are not able to present this month will get “first dibs” for next month’s drawing.
Off the Wall
Here’s the latest Exhibition Committee news.

The 97th Annual Juried Exhibition opens Monday, May 2 at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery located at 1100 West Clark Avenue in Burbank. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday 9 am to 9 pm, Friday 9 am to 7 pm and Saturday 9 am to 1pm. This exhibition, juried by Ken Ronney, features 79 new and exciting art works from 51 members. In addition to the art in the gallery, there will be print bins and a gift boutique where artworks will be available for purchase on a cash-and-carry basis. The full-color exhibition catalog will be available for purchase as well.

I want to thank Alison Davies, Danny Mattijetz, Karen Hochman Brown and Debbi Swanson Patrick for all of their valuable assistance in producing the catalog. Concurrent with the gallery exhibition, there will be an online exhibition at ISSUU.com  Just search Pasadena Society of Artists to view the 97th Annual and several additional exhibitions presented by PSA during 2021.

Plan to attend the 97th Annual Juried Exhibition Artist Reception Saturday, May 7 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the gallery. Awards will be presented around 3 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

Peering into the future, there will be several more exhibition opportunities during 2022. These include the Artist’s Choice Exhibition at Whites Fine Art Gallery in Montrose during the month of October, an exhibition featuring digital and tradtional photography along with images generated using the digital enviroment only, and a couple more exhibitions that are currently in development. All future PSA exhibitions will be online with selected exhibitions including a gallery installation.

As the Exhibition Committee becomes more active with additional gallery installations during 2022, more volunteers will be needed.  Give this some thought and plan to volunteer for a future exhibition installation or other exhibition-related activity. It's a great way to make new friends and satisfy your obligation to provide 5 hours of volunteer service to PSA every year. This request applies to all members of PSA. You will discover how much fun the Exhibition Committee and its volunteers can have installing an exhibition or helping out during an in-person artwork take-in or helping out at a reception. We hope to see you volunteering soon.

See you in May.
