I initially painted this picture several years ago. I recently worked on it some more and I'm happier with it.
ARTIST BIO

I was born and grew up in the Los Angeles area. I majored in art in high school, fully expecting to go on to an art college. Unfortunately I did not continue with that hoped-for art degree.  Instead I bent to the demands of work and family and got a degree in liberal arts, which was, at that time, seen as much more useful and marketable.

As satisfying as my family and career were, it wasn’t until retirement that I was finally able to search for that which filled my being both personally and totally.  In trying to catch up with art, I attended both private and public schools as well as a number of workshops with individual artists.

Hello, Fellow Artists!

Forget safety. Live where you fear to live.
                                                   -Rumi

The universe has decided that she is not ready to go easy on my family just yet and so all around me are the constant reminders of how precious and impermanent life is. I have therefore decided this is no time to live small, and with February upon us, I will use this shortest month of the year as a time to practice being brave. I’ve resolved to set a month-long challenge for myself and turn toward the places where I currently hesitate to tread. I hope you will join me and confront an area of your own art practice that gives you pause. As I have not been able to spend much time in the studio of late, my intention is to spend time in it every day of this month. I know there is great comfort to be found in the flow and that it takes consistency to get there.

I remain hopeful that we will find a way to gather for a member meeting in February, likely virtually, and will look forward to a hearty conversation about our battle wounds and winnings!

Warmly,
Shaney Watters
New PSA Logo
Dear Members,

We are about to redesign the PSA logo as our 100th anniversary is coming up in 2025. If you have a graphics background and are interested in submitting ideas for review, please contact me directly. Or if there is anything you would like to see represented in the designs, please let me know.

We aren't doing a contest because it caused quite a few problems in the past. Instead, we're asking those with professional graphics backgrounds to participate and understand that there will be a review and voting process to develop the final logo. Thank you!

FEBRUARY MEMBER MEETING:
TO BE ANNOUNCED
Off the Wall
Here’s the latest from the Exhibition Committee:

The 2022 PSA exhibition year starts with the New Members Showcase set to open online at ISSUU.com March 1. The eleven new members of PSA wil be exhibitiing the artwork presented to the new member screening committee during 2021 along with their artist statements. The New Members Showcase is always an exciting exhibition. Plan to visit the online presentation starting March 1.

Immediately following the New Members Showcase opening will be the take-in/jury for the 97th Annual Juried Exhibition. Currently the take-in is scheduled for mid-March. The entry process will be via Smartsheet and the jury process may be in-person or online, depending upon pandemic concerns. So start finishing up your latest artwork and polish up your photography skills so you can submit your digital entries.

The 97th Annual will open May 1 at the Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center Gallery in Burbank. The artists' reception will be the following weekend.

Additional exhibition opportunities are still in the planning stages. They include an Artist’s Choice Exhibition at Whites Fine Art Gallery in the fall, a single-medium exhibition and one or two other exhibitions before the end of 2022. All PSA exhibitions will continue to be online at ISSUU.com and printed catalogs for each exhibition will be available from Blurb.com.

The gallery exhibitions, the 97th and the Artist’s Choice, will require a team of volunteers to help install, present the reception, and close the exhibition. Please consider volunteering for these activities. It is lots of fun and serves to support all of PSA by making these exhibitions and related activities possible. Remember PSA runs entirely on volunteer power (that means you and your willingness to help out for an afternoon or evening every so often).

Looking forward to seeing you and your artwork at a PSA exhibition real soon.
