Dear Friends,
On April 23, 2019, WINGS WorldQuest inducted four new Fellows at the Women of Discovery Awards. Mandë Holford, Krithi Karanth, Laly Lichtenfeld, and Darlene Lim awed and inspired us with stories about their research, exploration, conservation and community initiatives, and thoughts on women and leadership. Thank you to all who attended and supported.

You can now check out their virtual trading cards on the WINGS website.
They join an international community of 84 WINGS Fellows, and now this network of women field scientists is enriched by their contributions, questions and interjections to the ongoing conversation that WINGS enables and fortifies. They strengthen WINGS’ foundation and outlook for future Women of Discovery.

All the best,
Yael Jekogian

"Yeah She Did" Celebrates Explorers
WINGS Managing Director Yael Jekogian, Junior Council Member Jacqueline Dikansky, Sophie Hollingsworth, Yeah She Did Producer Kylie Holloway, Junior Council Founder Kimi Goldstein, Flag Carrier Sefra Alexandra
Thank you to Caveat NYC for showcasing the WINGS Junior Council during Yeah She Did, a storytelling series about forgotten women throughout history and donating a portion of the proceeds to WINGS. April's theme was Explorers, and our own Sophie Hollingsworth, a Flag Carrier and the Junior Council Explorer-in-Residence, spoke on the panel about the unsung shero Osa Johnson.
Sefra Alexandra: The Taro Tales
Sefra Alexandra, also known as the "Seed Huntress," spent two months in Fiji with the 2018 Genebank Impacts Fellowship program.
She worked in the field gathering stories about how seeds that had been housed in a seed bank were redistributed after the Taro Leaf Blight epidemic in Samoa in 1993, helping to maintain taro as a staple food crop.
She created an impact assessment that highlights the importance of safeguarding the global diversity of seeds.

Sunniva Sorby: Hearts in the Ice
Our newest Flag Carrier is Sunniva Sorby, who, along with Hilde Fålun Strøm, will embark on a 9-month expedition to spend the winter in the High Arctic of Svalbard, Norway. They will live in a trapper's hut with no running water or electricity, and in complete darkness for 90 days. They plan to record and broadcast extreme climate change events as they happen, in real time. The expedition will take place from September 2019 through May 2020. Sorby and Strøm will host a live stream call with WINGS during their expedition, so stay tuned for how to listen in with us!
Palau Coral: Glimmer of Hope
Coral reefs are the largest living organism on the planet, home to an incredible amount of biodiversity, but corals around the world are in trouble with widespread bleaching events and disease outbreaks due to rising ocean temperatures. A team of scientists, including WINGS Flag Carrier Gaelin Rosenwaks, heads to the Western Pacific Island chain of Palau to unlock the mysteries of species that may contain a secret of adaptation for survival. In contrast to the many gloom and doom stories about corals and our warming oceans, Coral: Glimmer of Hope embarks to tell a positive story about the future of the world’s coral reefs. Gaelin carried WINGS Flag #30 on this expedition.
