Well Done!As we near the end of the semester, the Office of Student Veterans would like to take a moment to congratulate our Spring 2021 graduates. Warmest congratulations on your achievement, and best wishes for your next endeavor! Know that you will always be a part of the Duke Community, and the Duke Military Alumni Network is eagerly waiting to welcome you. Expect an email detailing how to connect with our Alumni Network soon.
In addition, we want to thank everyone for all their dedication, hard work, and sacrifices. Members of our student veteran and military-affiliated community were an integral part of Duke University's continuous success over the past year.
This summer, the Office of Student Veterans will not be holding virtual office hours, but we are still operational. You will still get communications coming from our office over the summer, just less frequently than usual. If we can support you in any way over the summer months, don't hesitate reaching out to us at veterans@studentaffairs.duke.edu.

Meet Our Community: Kristian Carlson

“Dear Duke Community, my family and I were delighted to experience a short year here in the Triangle to recharge together. The Navy has asked me to critically engage the issue of Pastoral Care among members of the military and their families. This year, I wrote my thesis for my ThM at Duke Divinity, focusing on strategies of ministry to those who’ve experienced complex wounds from war, operational strain, and the rigors of military life.
My family’s journey in the Navy has included an assignment to serve in Okinawa among Marines from 2012 -2015, and in San Diego from 2015 to 2020, where I served aboard the guided missile cruiser, USS Bunker Hill, and at Naval Special Warfare. My wife, Rev. Damaris (Briones) Carlson, has been a phenomenal partner, serving as a pastor to the military chapel we served in Japan. She also delivered our son while I was with a Strike Group in the Gulf in 2017, and cared for him again during a 7-month deployment in 2019. We are looking forward to our next assignment where I will interface with the Navy’s future Hospital Corpsmen as they receive advanced initial training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
Our time in North Carolina at Duke has been a tremendous privilege of learning in community and reflection on serving the spiritual needs of America’s incredible military community. We appreciate your prayer for all those deployed, for the 825 Active Duty Chaplains who serve, and for God’s favor to bear witness to God’s grace, love, and hope.”
The Office of Student Veterans would like to thank Kristian, one of our 2021 spring graduates, for writing this reflection. If you'd like to get to know Kristian better and learn how he carries on the Chaplain tradition, you can read an article that he is featured in here. You can also listen to a podcast interview here, where Kristian details his experience as a Navy Chaplain. We are proud you are part of our Duke Community and best of luck on your next adventure, Kristian!
