WLN members help set up a food pantry at the Salvation Army for Day of Caring.
Day of Caring

This year United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN) members went above and beyond for United Way of the Capital Region’s Day of Caring by completing two different projects!

Approximately 20 members scrubbed, assembled and organized shelves at the Salvation Army Harrisburg Capital City Region to get the new Food Choice Pantry ready for families. WLN also allotted $1,000 to the Salvation Army to purchase supplies for this project. Because of the hard work and dedication of these women, individuals and families in need now have access to their choice of healthy food.

For the second project, a group of 18 members completed seven murals which were started back in January as part of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. These murals will be hung at Camp Curtin Academy in Harrisburg and focus on the school’s “Leader in Me” program. This project required a lot of detail and we are thankful to the ladies for their steady hands and patience. So many students will be inspired by these murals as they walk through the halls of their school.

Thank you again to all of the women who volunteered for Day of Caring!

Conversation Events

More than 150 women attended United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network’s August Conversations with Women Who Make a Difference event at the Harrisburg Hilton. The luncheon featured a panel discussion with Jessica Whitmyer, vice president of finance/controller at Members 1st Credit Union; Diane Tokarsky, chair of constructions and procurement group at McNees, Wallace, & Nurick LLC; and Tina Nixon, vice president of mission effectiveness and chief diversity officer at PinnacleHealth System. The panelists shared their insight on the importance of leadership and philanthropy through life’s journey. Our 2016 WLN Chair Valerie Pritchett kindly served as emcee, asking questions of the panel as well as taking questions from the crowd.

Our next event will be on Wednesday, October 26 at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill. This luncheon will focus on the work of the Education, Health and Income Community Task Forces. Panel members from each of the task forces will discuss upcoming pilot projects to address the most pressing needs in our community.

Save the Date: Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities

Because of the overwhelming response we received last year for Women’s Leadership Network’s Thanksgiving volunteer opportunity, we will offer two different opportunities this year.

For the first project, volunteers will work with Chef Michael Harants to prepare part of a Thanksgiving meal for residents and staff of Catholic Charities’ Interfaith Shelter. This was an extremely popular volunteer opportunity two years ago and we’ve brought it back at your request.

For the second project, volunteers will organize and pack Thanksgiving meals at New Hope Ministries as part of their annual Thanksgiving food distribution. There will be two shifts available for this opportunity.

Both projects will take place on Saturday, November 19 and both are family friendly. The minimum age to volunteer is noted on the registration link. Space for both opportunities is limited and registration is required. To register visit: http://uwcr.partnershipplanners.org/wln
