LEGISLATORS HEAR CHIEF JUSTICE
GIVE "STATE OF JUDICIARY" ADDRESS

Georgia Chief Justice Michael Boggs spoke to lawmakers this morning in his annual "State of the Judiciary" address after which committee meetings were held throughout the afternoon.

The House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Education heard brief presentations from
Employees' Retirement System of Georgia (ERS), the Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), the Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA), and the state Department of Education.

A joint meeting of the House and Senate Retirement committees began immediately following.  Buster Evans, executive director of the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) testified and answered a number of questions.

Evans told committee members that as of June 30, 2024, TRS had assets of $106 billion and that as of this morning it has assets of $113 billion.

Evans also reported on the status of the state law allowing retired educators to return to the classroom in high demand subject areas while receiving TRS benefits.  The original legislation was HB 385, passed in 2022.  Because House leaders limited the pool of qualifying retirees, only about 428 retired educators have taken advantage of the program.

New bills filed

HB 127 would increase the number of personal days an educator may take from three to five if the individual has sick leave available.

HB 133 has been filed to allow students to leave school to attend "courses in religious moral instruction" off-campus for academic credit.
