Did someone say off-campus gathering?
| |
We’re back! The university is testing a new process for off-campus social gatherings, with some guidelines:
Non-seated gatherings with no food/drinks: yes ▶️
Seated gatherings with food/drinks: yes ▶️
Non-seated gatherings with food/drinks: not yet ⏸️
City of Oxford capacities: 10 indoors/25 outdoors
Lafayette County capacities: 50 indoors/100 outdoors
FSL or the Union will approve event locations and protocols and 25% of attendees must be tested through the Sentinel Testing Program on Tuesday or Wednesday before the event. Read more about those guidelines here.
And as always, masks and distancing are required in all settings and events must be registered in The ForUM. ✨

A holiday on a Saturday that can be celebrated outside and incorporates masks and individually-wrapped candy? Thanks for thinking ahead, Halloween. 🎃 Let’s think ahead about your costume. Wearing a culturally insensitive Halloween costume might be unintentional, but it’s still not ok. Ask yourself these questions before you dress up:
- Does this costume represent a culture that I’m not part of?
- Is this costume supposed to be funny because it’s making fun of real people, cultures or human traits?
- Is this costume based on stereotypes or misinformation?
- Does this costume mimic traditional clothing or accessories of a specific culture that I’m not part of? Red flags: if the costume packaging says "traditional," "ethnic," "colonial," "cultural," "authentic" or "tribal."
- Would I be embarrassed if someone from the group I’d be dressed as saw me wearing this?
If you answered yes to any of these, consider a different costume that lets you have fun without offending others. The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, which came up with these questions, has other resources that may be able to help. Lastly, social media is never really private and anyone can take your picture. So get creative, get that 🍬 and get yourself home safely.
Or if dressing up isn’t for you, the Oxford Film Fest is hosting drive-in movies all week, like "Halloween,” “Halloweentown” and “Ghostbusters.” 🖤🧡
