2018 Volunteer Center Founder's Award  Winner Dale Laniga
Volunteer of the Year Event 2018

In honor of National Volunteer Month, the Volunteer Center held its Volunteer of the Year event Thursday, April 19, at Temple Beth El.  Thirty individuals and seven groups nominated by area agencies were recognized during this annual celebration of volunteerism.

This year two people received the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award. The first one went to Ginny Jones, the founder and volunteer CEO of New Digs Ministries. This agency collects and provides free furnishings and household good to families in need.  The second recipient was Kathryn McCorkle for her work with Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA.  She has served as board chair and long-range property planning committee chair. She helped stabilize the agency financially and they are seeing an increase in revenue and participation.

The Youth Volunteer of the Year Award went to Davan Hanley of Hershey. Under Davan’s leadership, he created a challenge to support Downtown Daily Bread at his school, Hershey High School, and the greater Hershey community. Davan and his team delivered 3,060 pairs of new socks in addition to cash donations. This challenge also greatly increased the visibility of this agency.

The Partnership for Hope received the Volunteer Group of the Year Award. This group has mobilized more than 100 volunteers to give more than 2,800 hours to serve struggling individuals in our community. They have mobilized teams from over a dozen churches and businesses to assist with basic needs distributions, community gardening projects and other community service efforts.

Dale Laninga of Harrisburg was awarded the Volunteer Center Founder’s Award, which is presented annually to an individual who displays outstanding volunteer leadership. Dale was nominated for his volunteer service by two different agencies. The first was Christian Churches United of the Tri-County Area where Dale has been the primary coordinator for their winter overnight homeless shelter for 15 years. Dale was also nominated by Paxton Ministries where he has volunteered in a number of roles for the last 30 years, including eight years as board chair.
