Yom Ha'Atzmaut Sameach By Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld
On this Yom Ha’atzma’ut, I want to share a story with you. It is a story of connection between two Hebrew College alumni and their communities, one in Palo Alto, California and one on Kibbutz Ha’Ma’apil in Israel. It is a story of connection sustained over unanticipated distances and disruptions. It is a story of a connection tended carefully, patiently, persistently, over time, woven together with the threads of friendship and of Torah.

The Sacred and Mythic Dimensions of Yom Ha’atzmaut by Rabbi Ebn Leader
The Atzmaut which we celebrate is the independence of responsibility for our own lives, at a personal theological level and at a communal political level. And while the Israeli proclamation of independence gave us the date and the symbolic framework of the holiday, it is no less a celebration for us American Jews who are participating in the great experiment of owning our destiny as partners in a state together with non-Jewish people.

Building and forming a holy community is hard work even in normal times, and all the more so during a pandemic. May we come together in person when possible, find holiness when apart, and as we’re spread out, may we work harder to reach out so that communal holiness can encompass the whole community.

Capstones & Cake Rabbinical and cantorial students celebrated Hebrew College's annual year-end Cake Day on Wednesday. The morning included ordainee capstone presentations and blessings, as well as class cakes, which each cake including as many letters in the word “rabbi” or "Hazzan" as the number of years of completed training. Vocalpalooza! This week's Hebrew College "Vocalpalooza" featuring Kol Arev, Hebrew College’s Chamber Choir, included works in Hebrew, Ladino, Italian, and Yiddish. Among the works were “Abi Gezint,” “Erev Shel Shoshanim," and Cantor Jeff Klepper’s “Oseh Shalom,” as well as duets and solo pieces by cantorial students.
