Joe Fanning, PhD, an associate professor of medicine, directs two courses within the VUSM curriculum: the Medical Ethics Advanced Clinical Experience and the Ethics in Health Care Advanced Elective. He enjoys supporting students as they learn and live the role-based responsibilities of a physician. "I consider it a privilege to be part of the moral transformation into a role defined by the most essential human activity – care," he stated. Dr. Fanning loves when students in his Medical Ethics ACE are engaging in ethically complex patient situations, and dealing with the interconnection between theoretical and practical content.

A typical day for Dr. Fanning could start with him drafting an article, and then running the ethics consultation list with medical students. In the afternoon, he can be found teaching an undergraduate course on death and dying and finishing his day facilitating an ethics case conference at the VUMC Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society.

If you are expecting to graduate in 2025, you will receive a survey on Jan. 2 to rank your top Acting Internship choices. The survey will be due on Jan. 17. As a reminder, you are placed in your AIs based on a lottery system (i.e., not first-come, first-serve) so please take your time in completing the survey. A recording of the Elective Counseling: AI Fair can be found here.
