Big wins for physicians:
Tort Caps and Independent Practice

Tort Caps:
The Tennessee Supreme Court put its stamp of approval on the constitutionality of the reforms that TMA, NAM and other organizations worked tirelessly to achieve nearly eight years ago.
The result is that Tennessee’s statutory caps on non-economic damages are viable and cannot go away unless the Court reverses itself or a future configuration of the Court reaches a different conclusion.  Click here to read more details on the TMA website.
Independent Practice:
This week, HB 2203 regarding Nurse Independent Practice was taken off notice in House Health Subcommittee.
Many doctors from Nashville and across Tennessee contacted legislators in opposition to this bill. Physicians and nurses will continue to work in a physician-led, team-based care environment for the safety of patients. Click here to read about the Coalition for Collaborative Care that was formed in opposition to this bill
We want to thank the MANY NAM member physicians
who were involved in both of these efforts!

Day on the Hill Transitions to Virtual Event; Wednesday, March 25

A decision was made to transition the format of our planned Day on the Hill on Wednesday, March 25 from a live, in-person event to a virtual statewide advocacy effort. Click here to learn more.

COVID-19 Resources Available

The Tennessee Department of Health and the Metro Nashville Public Health Department are in frequent contact with each other and with federal agencies and officials on all issues relating to the spread of the coronavirus. The following resource links provide essential information for medical practices.

Notable NAM members offer advice to public about COVID-19:

NAM member William Schaffner, MD,  Professor of Preventive Medicine in the Department of Health Policy as well as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, was featured on nationwide NBC News to inform the public and answer basic questions about COVID-19.
NAM member Marie Griffin, MD, Vanderbilt University Medical Center professor and epidemiologist interviewed with the Nashville Business Journal to answer common questions from the employer perspective.
NAM member and former U.S. Senator, Bill Frist, MD, shared tips on how businesses can prepare for the coronavirus. Frist’s encounter with SARS is one of several the Nashville doctor and businessman had with outbreaks during his 12-year career as a lawmaker that makes him uniquely qualified to address COVID-19, the flu-like disease better known as the coronavirus.

Student Events Are a Success!

NAM held events in late February and early March for our medical student members at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College.

Thank you to Christopher Ott, M.D., for speaking with our medical students and residents for the Physician Perspectives joint event in February! Dr. Ott is the vice chair for the Medical Foundation of Nashville and chief medical officer at HCA Physician Services Group.

Both medical schools also planned lunchtime events to learn about legislation, and how to get involved in statewide advocacy. We appreciate the opportunity to engage with the next generation of physician leaders in our membership!

Become a 2020 TMA Delegate and Represent Medicine!

Physicians in our region need strong representation in Nashville to advocate on legislative issues impacting the practice of medicine and patient care in Tennessee. The Tennessee Medical Association legislative policy process begins at the House of Delegates. Becoming a Delegate is one of the most effective ways member physicians can impact legislative outcomes that affect physicians and patients alike. Positions remain available.

In 2019, Nashville had the largest delegation present from any local medical society. Delegates will represent their fellow physicians at the TMA House of Delegates on May 16, in Franklin, TN. Interested members can contact Rebecca Leslie at rleslie@nashvillemedicine.org.
