Good Evening:
In Monday's IRW, we'll have a radio station sale, along with other news. Have a wonderful Friday and a great weekend. Northeast
Dirk Rowley will succeed Brett Thomas as evening co-anchor at Nexstar's CBS affiliate WANE-TV (Channel 15, Fort Wayne). Mr. Rowley will join co-host Terra Brantley in mid-August. Mr. Rowley's Fort Wayne broadcasting career began in mornings at Sarkes Tarzian's AC/WAJI (95.1fm, Fort Wayne) where he co-hosted the Dirk and Jeannette show for 14 years. Mr. Rowley moved to television in 2014, working for ABC affiliate/WPTA-TV (Channel 21) and hosting their INsight local weekday talk and lifestyle show.
Speaking of WPTA, on Fort Wayne's west side, 3401 Butler Road houses the studios of Quincy Media's ABC and NBC affiliates/WPTA-TV (Channel 21, Fort Wayne). Quincy has ABC on 21.1 ("ABC21") while the NBC affiliation is on 21.2 as "Fort Wayne's NBC."
A Thursday evening Fort Wayne television history lesson, if you will:
In 1953, Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette publisher William Kunkel began his NBC affiliate/WKJG (Channel 33, Fort Wayne).
Sarkes Tarzian began his ABC affiliate/WPTA (Channel 21, Fort Wayne) in 1957. When Sarkes Tarzian started WPTA, he named it after his daughter Patricia. The Butler Road studios had a tower (also built at that time).
WKJG-TV had its studios and tower over on West State Boulevard. WKJG-TV became WISE-TV on Monday May 26, 2003 (Memorial Day).
In March 2005, New Vision Broadcasting sold WISE-TV. Shortly thereafter, WISE-TV began broadcasting out of WPTA's studio building on Butler Road. The WISE-TV transmitter and antenna also moved to Butler Road.
In August 2016, the NBC affiliation moved from WISE-TV to the .2 subchannel of WPTA-TV. (How's your scorecard look? A bit tattered, you say?)
Recently, tower crews began work on a new 800 foot tower which will have antennas for both Channels 21 and 33 on it. Once that tower is in service, the tower built in 1957 at Butler Road will be dismantled. Here's more from Fort Wayne's NBC. http://www.fortwaynesnbc.com/story/38720499/going-up-new-tower-takes-form-at-television-park
Before we leave "Television Park" on Butler Road, tomorrow will be the last time Fort Wayne viewers will wake up to Pauleen Le, co-anchor of "Fort Wayne's NBC Today". Ms. Le will exit after tomorrow's show, after joining "Fort Wayne's NBC" in the 5am-to-7am timeslot in August 2016. Before her time in Fort Wayne, Ms. Lee worked in Green Bay, Wisconsin as a morning reporter and fill in anchor at WLUK-TV ("Good Day Wisconsin").
(Remember, the FCC recently approved Quincy Media's $952,884 purchase of WISE-TV from SagamoreHill. That sale hasn't yet closed.)
