Nitobe Memorial Garden will be open on September 5th for Labour Day. UBC Botanical Garden, the Greenheart TreeWalk and the Shop in the Garden & Garden Centre will remain closed as per our usual schedule.

Apple Festival is back with an in-person festival!

A family event for all ages, UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of BC’s favourite fruits. From learning about the diversity of apples to tasting rare and unusual varieties, Apple Festival is a great opportunity to discover more about this delicious fruit.

To make sure we deliver a great experience, we are limiting ticket sales and only selling tickets online. Buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Early bird ticket sales are on now and ticket prices will go up on September 22nd. Tasting tent tickets are limited capacity and timed entry, allowing for the greatest variety of apples for tasting.

Treasured Bulb Sale

September 17 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Come discover garden favourites, rare wonders and specialty bulbs for all seasons!

Our Treasured Bulb Sale focuses on uncommon dormant bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes, all donated by the Garden, volunteer propagation groups, and the Friends of the Garden. In previous years, our crew prepped and sold 150 different taxa from Acis to Zantedeschia!

The Alpine Garden Club of BC Fall Plant Sale will be back on-site this year. Enjoy the expanded selection of these two popular sales together in one location.

The Shop in the Garden will also be open with lots of accessories and tools for bulb planting, as well as your favourite commercial bulb collections. Experts will be on hand to offer gardening advice.

The Treasured Bulb Sale is organized by the Friends of the Garden.

All proceeds support UBC Botanical Garden.

September in the Garden

September is an excellent time for viewing mountain ashes and whitebeams, and 2022, like 2018 (when this article first appeared), is likely to be a banner year for their fruits in UBC Botanical Garden. In all, there are around one hundred species of trees and shrubs in Sorbus and another hundred or so in Aria. Both are valued ornamentally for their fruits, which are referred to by nearly everyone as berries. They are technically pomes—the same kind of fruit produced by apples and pears (and quinces, hawthorns, cotoneasters, photinias, etc.). Depending on the species or cultivar, pomes may be white, yellow, orange, brown, red or pink.

Fall is setting in, the evenings are shorter and cooler with the late summer hues dotting the landscape. Join Douglas Justice, Associate Director Horticulture & Collections on a special tour of UBC Botanical Garden for our Garden Members only.

Join a one-hour private tour on either September 13th OR September 20th at 6:00 pm.

Gates to the Garden will open at 5:45 pm, allowing access to the Garden’s parking lot for tour participants only. Before the tour begins, we will gather at the entrance to the Garden, in the courtyard.

Note: You must be a current UBC Botanical Garden member to attend this tour. If you are not yet a member, you can purchase a membership here.

Tea Ceremonies at Nitobe Memorial Garden

A visit to Nitobe Memorial Garden is a window into Japanese culture and brings to light an important aspect of Japanese-Canadian history. Deepen your understanding of Japanese culture by attending one of our traditional Japanese tea ceremonies at Nitobe Memorial Garden with The Urasenke Foundation of Vancouver.

Cost: Fee $10 cash only (plus admission to the Garden, which can be paid by card)

The last tea ceremonies of the season are on Saturday, September 24th at the following times: 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm & 3 pm

Tours go ahead rain or shine but may occasionally be cancelled due to illness or volunteer availability. Please ask at our admission desk when you arrive.

These public tours are free with admission or membership!

Drop-in tours are designed for individuals, families, and small groups. They are not intended for organized groups such as senior centres, birthday parties or community groups. If you’d like to coordinate a group tour, please fill out our group experience booking form.
