Greetings, Volunteers!

Happy December! As the days get darker and the air gets cooler, you may be looking for an activity or hobby to help make these short days feel a little brighter. May I recommend volunteering?

To sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email and we will help answer any questions you may have. Then simply send confirmation of your volunteer hours to volunteer@garbagetogarden.org to receive credit.

Volunteer with Preble Street!

The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. Preble Street has the following volunteer opportunities available!
Food Security Hub Kitchen:  Kitchen prep and dishwashing, shifts available every day of the week, 7AM-10AM, 10:30AM-1:00PM and 1:30PM-4:30PM 
 
Food Security Hub Pantry: Stocking shelves and preparing food boxes, shifts available Tuesday & Thursday, 10AM-1PM 
 
Florence House Women's Shelter: Prepping and serving breakfast, lunch or dinner, shifts available every day of the week, 7:45AM-10:00AM, 10:30AM-1:30PM and 4PM-6:30PM 

Homeless Services Center:  Serving lunch or dinner, shifts available every day of the week, 11:30AM-1:30PM and 4:30PM-6:30PM 

Receiving Center:  Sorting clothing donations, shifts available Monday & Wednesday & Friday, 9AM-12PM 

Teen Center Kitchen: Serving breakfast, lunch or dinner, shifts available every day of the week, 7AM-10AM, 10:30AM-1:30PM, 5PM-7:30PM, PLEASE NOTE: these shifts require SBI and DHHS approvals due to access to a vulnerable, underage population.  Those checks take up to 6 weeks and are paid for by Preble Street.  

Food delivery: We need drivers to pick up and deliver food bags to two sites, twice daily in Portland. These run 1 to 1.5 hours, require the use of volunteer vehicles for which there is no reimbursement for gas. 

Portland Snow Shoveling Volunteers Needed!

The Age-Friendly Portland Steering Committee is looking for volunteers to shovel snow for elderly neighbors. Please reach out to Linda at lsw@portlandmaine.gov to participate! 

Come door hanging with us!

In partnership with the City of Portland, we are working to promote composting efforts across Portland. We will be leading street teams to help distribute door hangers.

Wednesday, December 6th 10am - 12pm.

To sign up for a shift, OR, if you are not available at the above time but interested on door hanging on your own time, email us!

Volunteer at Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program!

Mid Coast Hunger Prevention  Program (MCHPP) is located in Brunswick, Maine and is the largest hunger relief and prevention agency in the mid coast region. Read on to see some volunteer opportunities availble!
Food Pantry Volunteers: help to stock our grocery-store style pantry and help guests shop for their food
Intake Volunteers: using an online platform to welcome pantry guests, collect demographic information, and track visitors to our Food Pantry
Drivers (clean driving record required)
Deliver groceries door-to-door to community members (personal vehicle), Pick up rescued and donated food from local grocery stores and deliver to MCHPP (agency vehicle)

Volunteer with Maine Needs

Maine Needs would love to have your help sorting through our clothing donations and packing bags if needed items for families and individuals around the state! This is a particular busy time when people are in need of winter clothes, so we would like to have you join us. It’s easy to sign up! Just go to our website at Maineneeds.org!
