November in the Garden
November is a time when garden plants often descend into subtlety. Without frost and dry weather, the spectacular foliage displays begin to diminish. There are some exceptions. A few late-colouring plants aside, we generally think of colourful berries for autumn interest. Still, there are a number of plants that normally flower in November, and these are worth considering a visit around.

Apple Festival Re-cap
UBC Apple Festival returned for its 31st year with its first in-person event since the pandemic.
After a long two years filled with Zoom meetings, this year’s in-person Apple Festival, organized by the Friends of the Garden volunteers, was a refreshing event that did not disappoint. For a UBC student, it was the perfect opportunity to take a break from midterms, get friends together and discover new varieties of apples.
Ariel, a UBC student and our Marketing and Communications Assistant at UBC Botanical Garden, attended Apple Festival for the first time since the pandemic.

Book Signing & Special pre-order offer from Gary Lewis of Phoenix Perennials
The Complete Book of Ground Covers | 4000 Plants that Reduce Maintenance, Control Erosion, and Beautify the Landscape.
On Wednesday, November 9th, Gary Lewis of Phoenix Perennials and UBC alumnus (M.Sc. Department of Botany) will be doing a book signing of his new ground cover encyclopedia at UBC Botanical Garden's Shop in the Garden and Garden Centre at 11:30 am. Gary has offered to donate 10% of the book purchases to UBC Botanical Garden for pre-ordered books by UBC Botanical Garden supporters, and books sold at the book signing. However, to make sure Gary brings enough books to meet demand and to maximize the donation to the Garden, we highly recommend that you place a pre-order now.
Holiday gift alert! At the time of the book signing, there will be just six and a half weeks until Christmas, and every gardener in your life will need a copy!
Here’s how to pre-order:
2. Place your order online. When checking out, put “UBC” in the Notes Field. This is how Phoenix will identify your order and make a donation on your behalf.
3. Gary will bring your copy (or copies!) to the book signing for you to pick up. If you can’t make it to the signing, Gary will leave your copies at the Shop in the Garden at UBC Botanical Garden for you to pick up later during regular opening hours.
4. If you would like a special message added to your signed copy, you can also type instructions into this same Notes field.
Fine Print: This offer does not apply to books pre-ordered before the fundraiser was announced.
If you have any questions, please contact gfan@telus.net
Alternatively, a limited supply of copies will be available at the Shop. Please notify Jenny Forbes if you would like to reserve one or more copies at jjforbes@mail.ubc.ca
