Exam Makeup Day (For Absences During Finals)
Every year Brebeuf looks forward to Bistro as a celebration of the whole Brebeuf community; the people who make it special, the Jesuit charism of our school, and the charitable spirit of all friends of Brebeuf.
THIS YEAR IS SPECIAL!
We are excited to host this year’s Bistro at the Biltwell. The Biltwell Event Center was originally constructed in 1922 and opened as an event venue in 2015. This historic factory/warehouse features exposed brick walls, sliding metal doors, hardwood floors, 20-foot ceilings with a sawtooth roof, and wall-to-wall windows that provide a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline. This one-of-a-kind venue was recently featured in the Indianapolis Star as one of the top new venues in Indianapolis.
... BUT WAIT, THERE IS MORE!
Were you singing along to the Yacht Rock station on XM this summer? For this year’s Bistro, we are bringing back all of your favorite light rock from the 70’s with our featured entertainment, Yacht Rock Revue™, sponsored in part by the Brebeuf Dads Club. If you haven’t seen Yacht Rock Revue™ in person - it is a must!
“By blurring the lines between a tribute, an original act, and a comedic troupe, the Yacht Rock Revue™ has forged a unique niche market and a special bond with their fans. The band attacks each song as if it were their own, and the energy exchanged between the band and the crowd has more in common with a stadium U2 show than that of a typical bar band.”
This band is wildly popular both locally and nationally. They are regulars at the Vogue and consistently pack the venue. To learn more and get a sneak peak of this “Greatest Show on Surf and the finest tribute to ‘70’s light rock to ever perform anywhere. Ever.” visit their webpage http://yachtrockrevue.com/.

Pictures of the Week

CONGRATULATIONS SEMIRA AND HANNA!
Semira Killebrew ‘19 won the 60 meter dash in the Circle Logistics Warrior Invite in Fort Wayne, on Saturday, December 9. She beat many college sprinters, with a time of 7.46 that currently ranks as the best high school time in the nation. Semira has lofty goals for the upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons and has worked diligently in the classroom and on the track to become an elite scholar-athlete. She recently received an interest letter, one of many, from the University of Texas, which is one of her top college choices. Great job, Semira!
Brebeuf junior, Hanna Hearn ran in the Indianapolis Winter Break Meet at the University of Indianapolis. Hanna placed 5th overall in the 60 meter dash while facing stiff competition from college sprinters. Hanna is a transfer student from Laurel, Mississippi and has her sights set on striving for more and becoming a complete scholar-athlete. Great job!

Loves About Brebeuf
I love the people I have met and relationships I have formed. Brebeuf provides a unique environment where I am able to have teachers who care about my well-being as a whole person, rather than just a student in their classes. I have made friendships with people who I would never have met without Brebeuf! This special space has given me the opportunity to grow into the person I am today, which I am extremely proud of.
Favorite Class
My favorite class of all time is my AP Psychology class last year with Mr. Petty! The class was so interesting, and I really found my interest in the human mind during that class!
Future Plans
I am unsure of what college I will attend next year, but I want to study Neuroscience and Psychology!
Teams & Co-Curriculars
I would say that I am a pretty involved member of the Brebeuf community! I have been a part of the cheerleading team for all four years and have been a part of our dance team for the past two years. In addition, I have participated in every Spring Musical since my freshman year, and even played Mama in last year’s production of “Chicago”. In regards to my clubs, I am Co-President of Black Student Union and Vice President of Social Justice Club. I also am a member of Student Advocates for Gender Equality, and Pre-Med Club. I also took part in the 2017 Debutante Cotillion this year, where I won a book award.
Random Facts
Two random facts about me are that I was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and I HATE ketchup!
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I’d have to say MINDHUNTER or Stranger Things! They’re both SOO good!
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I would go back to Salvador, Brazil! It’s such a beautiful place and the food was amazing!
What advice would you offer our Braves in the Class of 2021?
Do not be afraid of growing up or being yourself. At Brebeuf we have the privilege to mature into the people we wish to become, and have plenty of resources around you to help with the process. We all come in freshman year, either completely sure of who we think we are or incredibly frightened by not knowing our identity. But, I know you will figure it out. It takes time, hard work, and patience, but the end result is very rewarding.
Scholarship/Financial Aid News and Announcements
The backbone of all financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1 at www.fafsa.gov and should be completed as soon as possible for the 2018-19 year. Many schools also require completion of the CSS Profile CSS Profile, administered by the College Board, which asks more specific questions and accesses additional funds. The FAFSA is free; the CSS Profile has a small fee.
The VAST majority of scholarships (merit aid) are found within the individual college admission/financial aid websites and academic departments. Be on the lookout for additional essays, recommendations/nominations, and deadlines for these opportunities at the colleges to which you’ve applied.
A round-up of non-institutional scholarships with upcoming application deadlines can be found on Naviance Family Connection in the “Document Library” (right side of the home page).
Many wonderful opportunities are also available through the Central Indiana Community Foundation. Application deadline: February 6, 2018. See CICF scholarships for details.

Virtual Learning Days for Future Weather Closures

The Indiana Department of Education once again approved Brebeuf’s application for their Distance Virtual Learning Program. The program provides a way for schools meeting the criteria to create a virtual learning environment to replace missed class time, avoiding the necessity for makeup days caused by severe weather cancellations.
During any future weather closures for Brebeuf Jesuit, if a Virtual Learning Day is warranted, families will receive instructions detailing how to access Portals individual class pages regarding the Virtual Learning Program expectations for that class day, as posted by each class instructor.
Virtual Learning Days ensure that when students return to school, the progression of learning has experienced only a minimal disruption.
In the event of a regular class day being cancelled, students will find the following:
  • Assignment posted to Portals on their class page by 8:30 a.m. the day of class cancellation
  • Title of assignment clearly indicating – “Virtual Learning Day Assignment for (date)”
  • A clear deadline for completion, either that day or in the future
If you have any questions concerning Virtual Learning Days, please contact Jen LaMaster, Assistant Principal at jlamaster@brebeuf.org.
