To keep South Africa’s army of healthcare workers fighting the pandemic on the frontlines healthy and hydrated, the Rooibos industry has donated 78 000 cups of Rooibos tea to designated COVID-19 hospitals throughout the country.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) said dedicated doctors, nurses, and other medical staff are bearing the brunt as they risk their lives to care for Covid-19 patients.
“Hospitals are filling up every day and frontline staff are working long hours to battle the virus day and night. Many of them are exhausted, both physically and mentally, and even have scars from wearing protective devices, but they keep soldiering on. Now more than ever, we want to show our gratitude by supplying them with a steady stream of Rooibos tea to remind them that we care,” she said.
Among the hospitals that benefited from the donation are Groote Schuur, the Brackengate Field Hospital in Brackenfell (Western Cape), King Edward VIII, and Grey’s Hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, Charlotte Maxeke and Steve Biko Hospitals in Gauteng.

According to a recent article by eathis.com, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in America estimates that most people have a heart age older than their actual physical age, meaning that they are at risk of suffering from heart disease.
However, the article cites an interesting study by Emory University which shows that the chances of heart disease can be reduced by nearly 50% if one simply changes one’s diet to eat more foods that are good for your heart.
In the article, Rooibos is listed as one of the top drinks to consume to prevent heart disease. This is largely thanks to its antioxidants and the fact that it has a calming effect on those who drink it.
Seeing as September is Heart Health Awareness Month, everyone ought to do their part to look after their heart.

Heart disease is one of the biggest health issues in South Africa. With the arrival of Covid-19, it means that those with underlying heart problems face even greater health concerns. That’s why this year’s Heart Awareness Month – which is celebrated in September – takes on even more significance. Laager Rooibos, in conjunction with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of South Africa (HSFSA), are encouraging people to get "heart healthy" this month with the Laager Rooibos Heart Health Challenge.
Take the Laager Rooibos Heart Health Challenge in 10 easy steps:
1. Do five minutes of stretching every morning to improve circulation. 2. Choose drinks carefully, switching out sugary drinks for more nutritious homemade Laager Rooibos iced tea. Brew Laager Rooibos, allow to cool and add fresh fruit, ice, and some honey if desired. Laager Rooibos, rich in natural antioxidants, is the only rooibos tea that carries the HSFSA stamp, identifying heart-healthy food and beverages. 3. Reduce the salt consumption in ready-made foods, and use it in moderation when cooking and at the table. 4. Switch out fatty, salty snacks for homemade popcorn flavoured with seasoning. 5. Switch out full-cream milk and yoghurt for low-fat or fat-free options. 6. Drink a cup of Laager Rooibos tea before dinner to limit overeating. 7. Maintain a balanced diet by eating a variety of foods. Aim for colourful plates with plenty of vegetables (at least five different vegetables per day). 8. Only drink alcohol in moderation. 9. Keep active by aiming for 30 minutes of walking, running – or any form of moderate exercise – at least five times a week. 10. Get enough sleep. Set a bed-time goal and stick to it.
