Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation - January 15, 2016

On Friday, January 15, the Brebeuf Jesuit community will gather for its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation from 10:20 - 11:30 a.m. in the West Gym. The convocation, a joint effort of the diversity program and the Black Student Union, recognizes the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and, more importantly, the quest for justice for all within our society that drove Dr. King’s work in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to move others to action today.
The theme for this year’s convocation is “Let Your Voice be Heard,” and members of the Black Student Union will explore the theme through music, prayers, and readings. The Brebeuf Jesuit Choir will also perform. The keynote speaker for this year’s convocation is the Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak, currently serving a joint appointment to Butler University and Christian Theological Seminary as a faculty member and directing the Desmond Tutu Chair for Reconciliation and Global Justice at Christian Theological Seminary. Dr. Boesak was one of the active leaders of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and is a prolific writer and speaker about issues related to human rights, reconciliation, and global social justice.
This year’s convo promises to be a special one, and everyone in the Brebeuf community is invited to attend.
If you have any questions, please contact Freezell Brown at fbrown@brebeuf.org.

Student Spotlight

JALEN PERDUE '16
Loves about Brebeuf:
I love that at Brebeuf there is a sense of one big family. Everyone is really close with each other and you feel that you are all connected. Even just walking in the halls you can see how friendly the community is because everyone says hi to each other.
Favorite Class:
My favorite class is band with Mr. Hoernemann! Everyone loves him. I play the trumpet in band. I really like how students get the opportunity to step up and be leaders. Seniors get to help run the class which makes it really special.
Future Plans:
I plan to go into meteorology. Ever since I was young I have had a fascination with it. I think it all started because I was in a hurricane when I was young. I’m not sure where I plan to go yet but I plan to stay in Indiana.
Teams & Co-Curriculars:

Bowling
Band
Black Student Union
Gay Straight Alliance
Random Fact:
I have an albino fish named Beano.
Is Brebeuf as academically rigorous as they say?
Yes it’s definitely as academically rigorous as they say. Coming from a public school, Brebeuf has challenged me. I’ve learned a lot about how to have better time management with my work.
Would you rather…
Go to the movie theater or stay home with Netflix?
I would rather stay home with Netflix because it’s cheaper and you can stay in your pajamas. My favorite show on Netflix is Narcos.
Vacation in Hawaii or Alaska?
I would rather vacation in Hawaii. I don’t really like the cold plus Hawaii seems very pretty. I could also go scuba diving.
Watch TV or read a book?
I would rather watch TV because it gets to the point quicker.
Travel by sailboat or cruise ship?
I would travel by cruise ship because there are a lot more people on t. It feels safer with all of those people because you are not alone and there is tons of food.
Go forward in time or back in time?
I would want to go back in time so I can relive the happy moments and keep the future a mystery.

Brebeuf Jesuit Faculty and Staff Participate in Safety and Security Training

On Monday, January 4, Brebeuf Jesuit’s faculty and staff continued its training with the Indiana State Police (ISP) on emergency procedures in the event of an “active shooter” scenario (on campus). While we would like to think that such an event could never happen here, and statistically the likelihood is very low, the safety of our students and community is a responsibility that demands we prepare and plan.
In addition to the longstanding fire and severe weather drills, for several years now, Brebeuf students, faculty and staff have participated in lockdown or “Code Red” drills so that students know and practice what to do. Monday’s training was designed to give faculty and staff the further details that they need in order to direct students and to provide the most effective response until and after the arrival of law enforcement.
Speaking broadly about our safety measures here at Brebeuf Jesuit, some key elements of our general security and preparedness include:
  • We employ a School Resource Officer (SRO), here (on campus) throughout the school day, who is also an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
  • Through our SRO and our Dean’s Office, we maintain excellent and efficient lines of communication and cooperation with local law enforcement and safety personnel.
  • The two main entrances to the school – main lobby and gym lobby – are fully staffed throughout the school day with secure entry procedures for students, parents, visitors, etc.
  • Alarms and PA systems throughout the building are accessible and provide a means of communication in any situation.
Perhaps our most important resources as a school for prevention and preparedness are the relationships among our students, faculty and staff and our Jesuit ethos of cura personalis or care for one another. These relationships mean that concerns can be communicated between students and adults they trust, and that adults know the students well. One point of emphasis in the ISP training was that this is a school’s most effective means of prevention.
Thank you for entrusting your children to our care here at Brebeuf Jesuit. Security matters are headed up by Brenda Adams, Dean of Students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact her at badams@brebeuf.org. To view the presentation from the Indiana State Police, please click here
Dr. Suniya Luthar

Dr. Suniya Luthar Visiting Brebeuf Jesuit to Present: The Mental Price of Affluence

Dr. Suniya Luthar writes, “Evidence suggests that the privileged young are much more vulnerable today than in previous generations.” In particular, upper-middle class families are more likely to have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The pressure to get good grades, play sports, and get into the best colleges can be overwhelming. While stress can be important to show how hard students are working, it is also important to consider the negative impacts.
Dr. Suniya Luthar is a Foundation Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University and Professor Emerita at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She has conducted extensive research on children in affluent communities that has earned national attention and recognition.
On Monday, January 25, 2016 Brebeuf Jesuit will be hosting Dr. Luthar for her presentation – The Mental Price of Affluence – in an event co-sponsored by Cathedral High School and St. Richards Episcopal School. Dr. Luthar will be speaking to parents and guardians about her findings, the pressures facing economically advantaged students, and discussing ways to help students. All Brebeuf Jesuit, Cathedral, and St. Richard’s Episcopal families are encouraged to attend this event, join the discussion and learn more about helping students.
Event: Speaking of Psychology: The Mental Price of Affluence
Who: Dr. Suniya Luthar, author of Developmental Psychopathology: Perspectives on Adjustment, Risk, and Disorder; Resilience and Vulnerability in Childhood: Adaptation in the Context of Adversities
When: Monday, January 25, 2016 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, Room: Auditorium
Co-Sponsors: Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, Cathedral High School, and St. Richard’s Episcopal School

Freshman Service Days - Spring 2016

We will begin accepting permission forms for the Class of 2019 Freshman Service Days this week! Freshman Service Days are completely voluntary and do not count towards Community Service credit at Brebeuf. They are offered each year to freshmen to help introduce them to Brebeuf Jesuit's mission of being men and women for others, and it is our hope that it will start them on a path of service that will continue beyond the hours which they are required to complete during their junior and senior years. This is also a great opportunity for freshmen to get to know more of their classmates outside of the school setting.
Freshmen can participate in one or more of the Freshman Service Days as space allows. Class absences will be excused as long as permission slips are turned in two weeks prior to the trip.
More information and the permission slip can be accessed by clicking here.
If you have any questions, please contact Karly Geisse at kgeisse@brebeuf.org, or 317.524.7132.
