Spring 2016 Final Exam Schedule

Spring 2016 Final exam schedules were posted to Portals back in March. Students are asked to double-check the schedule in order to determine whether or not they have a conflict. A conflict is defined as two exams scheduled at the same time or four exams scheduled in one day. Please report any conflicts to the Principal's Office.

As always, during final exam days, students are required to be present only during the times they have exams. It is always difficult to find alternative times to take final exams and often it has a detrimental effect on a student's performance on the exam. Therefore, we ask families to please make every effort to schedule around final exams so that all students are present at their assigned exam times.

If you have any questions about finals scheduling please contact Shani Simonson in the Principal's Office at ssimonson@brebeuf.org or 317.524.7131.

Annual College Decision Day Luncheon celebrates the Class of 2016
It's hard to believe the school year is almost over and Brebeuf Jesuit seniors will be graduating soon! To celebrate their college decisions, the College Counseling Department hosted the Annual College Decision Day Luncheon this past Tuesday, April 26 in the Auditorium. Students wore their college apparel, decorated pennants, and ate delicious pizza with fellow students and faculty and staff. Congratulations Class of 2016!
Offering #BrebeufAppreciation for Faculty and Staff
In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, Brebeuf Jesuit is showing #BrebeufAppreciation by celebrating all of Brebeuf Jesuit’s faculty and staff. Over the next few weeks InDepth spotlights will feature a student paired with a faculty/staff member. Brebeuf Jesuit hopes you will learn even more about the special, life-long bonds between students and faculty and staff created in Brebeuf Jesuit's unique learning environment. Enjoy!

#BrebeufApprecation Student and Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Max Siegel '18 and Mrs. Robin Esteb, Science Teacher
What do you love most about Brebeuf Jesuit?
Max: The thing that I love the most about Brebeuf is how accepting everyone is here. It was hard leaving my previous school, having been attending with the same people for so long. Even though I knew a few people going to Brebeuf, I thought it would be hard to make friends, just like my old school. To my surprise, everyone here was so open and friendly. I felt at home, and was actually happy to come to school, which is still the case now. When I first arrived at Brebeuf, I was pretty timid, and found it hard to talk to people in my grade. Even though I was kind of awkward and a tad intimidating to some, when my friends met me, they accepted me and appreciated for who I am. I am not the person I was when I enrolled at Brebeuf, and I'm not afraid to be myself here.
Mrs. Esteb: I love that I can’t walk more than 5 feet down the hallway without someone greeting me with, “Good morning Mrs. Esteb” or, “How is your day today Robin?”  I am grateful for the opportunity to have gone on several sophomore retreats, where I have learned more about the amazing students that we have the pleasure of teaching. I also enjoyed being able to share and learn something about myself during that process. I love being part of the Brebeuf Science Department: We are second to none. We support, and even encourage, the inner geek in each other and in our students. It makes for a fun working environment, full of creativity and innovation.
What is something most people do not know about you?
Max: Something that most people do not know about me is that I love everything about jazz music. It started when I was in middle school and I was fascinated with the alto saxophone. I just had to pick it up because I wanted to sound just like the saxophones that you would hear playing smooth jazz. I stopped playing my saxophone when I got to high school, but I am planning to pick it back up over the summer. Even though I stopped playing my sax, I still listen to jazz all the time. I usually listen to it when I do my homework or before I go to bed. I prefer to listen to Keiko Matsui or Grover Washington Jr., but I can always appreciate a song with a good saxophone in it.
Mrs. Esteb: I grew up on a thousand acre farm that has been in my family for over 200 years. I was about 10 years old when I drove my first tractor, and I spent my childhood working and playing on the farm. We grew sugar beets, corn, navy and soy beans. Farm life was hard work. You were expected to spend your summers working in the fields, bailing straw, picking up rocks, and pulling weeds. Imagine doing that for eight hours a day! However, there were a lot of benefits as well. We had a lot of fun riding snowmobiles in the winter and were able to spend many days on Lake Huron fishing and water skiing. It made all of the hard work worth it.
If you were to describe Mrs. Esteb to someone who has never met her, what would you say?
Max: If I had to describe Mrs. Esteb to someone, the first thing I would say is that she is such a nice person! I am not a big fan of heavy calculations and a few other things in chemistry, but Mrs. Esteb makes it so enjoyable to come to class and learn everyday. It seems as if she is always in a good mood - it is infectious. She is also very understanding and approachable. I always feel welcome to ask questions. Throughout this year, she has changed my thinking about chemistry, even if I sometimes have some trouble understanding the material. I now love coming to class, learning about different formulas and properties, and then applying them in my labs. Class has become something that I feel like I get to go to instead of something that I have to go to. Even though chemistry is difficult, I do not regret taking it, in fact, I feel like I was blessed when I got Mrs. Esteb as a teacher.
If you were to describe Max to someone who has never met him, what would you say?
Mrs. Esteb: It’s impossible to have a bad day when Max is around. He always comes to class with a smile on his face and a great attitude that is contagious. He enjoys sharing interesting, random science facts that often lead us into great science discussions. He would make a great teammate for a science trivia night! He is always ready to participate in class and is almost always the first to raise his hand when I ask a question. Max excels in lab and has shared with me some of the interesting science experiments he has done in Junior High (shout out to his Junior High school science teacher!) I hope that one day he will say to his next science teacher “I remember when we did this awesome experiment in Mrs. Esteb’s chemistry class!” I can’t wait to see all of the amazing things Max will accomplish here at Brebeuf and beyond – sky’s the limit!

Brebeuf Jesuit: Developing and Empowering Servant Leaders

One way Brebeuf Jesuit strives to form its students into Men and Women for Others is through service. As part of the education of the whole person, service allows students to learn about different cultures and engage in the community while reflecting on the human experience.

Brebeuf Jesuit hopes to engage students to not only volunteer as a student, but to continue to provide service in their communities beyond Brebeuf and share their passions of service work with others.

Keon Gorge '17 Creates a Gravel Pit at Brebeuf Jesuit for Eagle Scout Project

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Keon Gorge ’17 decided to create a Gravel Pit at Brebeuf Jesuit to expand the Track and Field Team’s facilities. As a member of the Track and Field Team his freshman and sophomore years, Keon noticed that Brebeuf used a grass turf pit for shot put - instead of a sand or gravel pit - which made it difficult to locate the shot put ball’s point of contact for competition. He decided to create a gravel pit to more accurately measure athletes’ throw distances and keep the shots clean.
Keon researched the logistics and guidelines to appropriately create the pit and calculated the cost and materials needed. He then received the school’s permission to do the project as proposed and secured funding.
In the end, Keon was able to see his vision come to life while creating the pit during the week of March 12 with the help of Brebeuf Jesuit students and other volunteers. This new gravel pit will not only help Brebeuf Jesuit athletes, but it will also help students who compete in the Special Olympics of Indiana’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver Games that Brebeuf Jesuit hosts each fall. Congratulations Keon, and thank you for providing Brebeuf Jesuit something many students will enjoy using for years to come!

Monthly #BrebeufDrives for April and May

Thanks again to everyone in the Brebeuf Jesuit community for the overwhelming contributions to the Brebeuf Food Drive. This has been great momentum as Brebeuf Jesuit transitions back into the monthly #BrebeufDrives.
This past February, Brebeuf Jesuit donated 119 coats, 112 hats, 64 pairs of gloves, 51 scarves, and 12 handmade knitted baby blankets to the Crisis Office. Prior to receiving these donations, the Crisis Office had almost completely run out of winter clothing - so the donations were very much needed.
Brebeuf Jesuit began collecting sunscreen, bug spray, granola bars and new or gently used drawstring bags to help the families served by the Crisis Office prepare for Summer. Please continue to bring donations to either the Main Lobby or the Gym Lobby and place items in the #BrebeufDrives collection boxes.

Artwork of Bennett Smith '16 and Jackie Sublett '17 to be Featured in the Cordell Gallery

The Brebeuf Jesuit Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Mothers Association are pleased to announce that two of Brebeuf Jesuit student artists, Bennett Smith ‘16 and Jackie Sublett ’17, currently have their work displayed in the Cordell Gallery.

As an artist, Bennett Smith ’16, talks about the inspiration for his work, saying that, “The geometric and biomorphic forms found throughout the black and white pieces are resemblant of Kandinsky and Miró, among others; ultimately, artists I connect with in space, color, and form.”

Jackie Sublett ’17, reflects on her background when talking about her digital photography prints, saying, “As my family background is Ukrainian, I learned the art form known as Pysanky as a child. This historical art form is based from creating designs with the use of beeswax pens and colored dyes to form detailed images on eggs.”

Both Bennett and Jackie’s work will be on display until Monday, May 2. A closing reception to be held that day during the 9:15 a.m. PRT.

Congratulations Bennett and Jackie!

Young Alumni Retreat

Too much going on? Pulled in a million directions? You’re not the only one.

Brebeuf Jesuit’s Office of Mission and Identity is offering an all-day retreat for young alumni in their early to mid-twenties. Know a young alumni who might enjoy and benefit from this retreat? Encourage him or her to find out how other young adults answer these questions, learn how faith plays a role in their journeys, and take time to reflect on your own path.

Retreatants are invited to look at their lives to see where God has been, where God is present, and where God is calling them to be.

Retreat Information

The retreat will take place at Brebeuf Jesuit and begin at 9:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 14, 2016, and end at 5:00 p.m. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.

Brebeuf Jesuit Students 'Dive in' at The Cadaver Lab

Brebeuf Jesuit students in Mrs. McCarter’s Honors Anatomy and Physiology class recently visited The Cadaver Lab in Carmel, IN which is part of the Medical Academic Center.
Students were able to "dive right in" during the 2-hour exploration to learn more about the human body. Students explored multiple areas of the body including the spinal cord, tendons, ligaments, and respiratory system. The doctors at the center knew Brebeuf Jesuit students had been studying the respiratory system and even allowed them to explore a smoker’s lungs for observation.

College Application Essay Seminar
