Libraries celebrate Open Access Week with Shulenburger Award |
During International Open Access Week, October 23-29, KU Libraries granted the 2023 David Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communication to two recipients: Bruce Lieberman, professor in KU’s Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and senior curator at the Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum; and Cameron W. Piercy, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Founding Director of the Human-Machine Communication Lab.
Established in 2014 through a gift by former KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger, the Shulenburger Award recognizes KU faculty, staff, students and academic departments who champion open access and innovation in scholarly communication. The Award is given annually for exceptional efforts to advance innovations in open sharing and advocacy for positive change in the scholarly communication system.

Sprints Week advances research and teaching projects |
Areli Marina, associate professor of art history, had almost given up trying to wrangle the sprawling, multi-format data set that was stalling the momentum of her research.
Meanwhile, Sam Yates Meier, multi-term lecturer in visual communications, faced the daunting and important task of reexamining a history and philosophy of design course through a DEIB lens.
Both struggled with complex questions to which KU Libraries helped provide answers via Sprints Week, a five-day intensive collaboration that supports KU faculty and academic staff 's research and teaching projects to produce a tangible outcome or product during the spring-summer intersession. Sprinters are awarded a $1,000 stipend.
Applications for Sprints Week 2024 open in late January, and the resources and librarian expertise applied to Sprints projects are available year round.

Anschutz Library Makerspace
|
Among the many books, journals, and scientific papers supported by KU Libraries are robot parts, a tiny theater set, fruit fly containment panels, and podcasts on environmental geopolitics. These items have been added to the university’s scholarly outputs thanks to the Libraries’ Makerspace, a collaborative workspace for making, learning, exploring, and sharing.
Schedule a consultation to develop a plan for your classes, rethink assignments, or envision research in ways you haven’t before. The Makerspace creates a low barrier entry point for everyone to think about challenges, issues, and goals — no experience needed and curious minds welcome.
The Makerspace offers audio/podcast recording (sign up for training), A/V post production workstations, 3D printing, and more, available to faculty and students from all units and departments.
