Nursing students reflect on outreach trips to Costa Rica, Micronesia
This summer, two groups of California State University, Bakersfield nursing students left town for different corners of the world. With one group in Costa Rica and the other in Micronesia. Their outreach trips varied in many ways, but for both sets of students, their time abroad gave them more than just an opportunity to practice their skills.
“I knew I was going to be interacting with people from a different culture and learning new things from them,” said senior Jaspreet Kaur, who went to Micronesia. “Now, I feel like it has left such a deep impact on me. I think I’ll never be able to get it out of my mind, how just 10 days can have such significant mark on you.”
From June 3 to June 11, 15 students went to Costa Rica, with another 18 students taking the trip to Micronesia from July 21 to 31. The only overlap of the two groups was nursing professor Krystal Ball, who organized these trips and last year’s inaugural global outreach trip to Peru. These trips take students away from their hectic nursing curriculum and reconnect them with the reasons they want to go into the medical profession.

CSUB launches historic partnership
California State University, Bakersfield forged a historic partnership with one of the most prestigious research laboratories in the world on Sept. 19 in an agreement that presents an ambitious agenda to evolve energy and decarbonization science, promote climate resiliency and create unprecedented opportunities for CSUB students, faculty researchers and industry partners.
“We are here today to herald a new era in energy that is vital to the security, sustainability and prosperity of our region and the world,” said CSUB President Lynnette Zelezny. “And there is no better place to celebrate this new era than right here in Kern County, where California’s energy industry was born.”
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Livermore Lab Foundation signed a sweeping memorandum of understanding with CSUB, reportedly the first such agreement between the Department of Energy laboratory and a California State University campus.
