To the Parents and Members of The Haverford School Class of 2020,

Congratulations on this historic day! We are unbelievably proud of you, and delighted to welcome you into the distinguished ranks of Haverford School alumni. We very much wish that we could celebrate in person, but instead we were witness to wonderfully emotional moments as you walked across the Centennial Hall stage to receive your diploma from people who love you. We hope that you enjoyed that experience, and that you similarly enjoy watching our virtual Commencement ceremony, which includes these touching moments along with speeches from the three of us and from Dr. Charles Ball ’80 of the Department of Defense, our Commencement Speaker.

It is important for you to know, as you listen to the opening remarks, that the Commencement ceremony was filmed in advance of the civil unrest in which the nation currently finds itself.

At that time we were primarily focused on supporting our community through COVID-19, a pandemic that altered our experiences and created senses of loss and uncertainty for many of our boys, faculty, and staff. The Commencement remarks reflect those struggles, as well as the opportunities we seized as a result.

Today, as we present The Haverford School’s first virtual Commencement ceremony, we are facing not only a pandemic but also the greatest civil unrest since 1968. As such, we wish to reiterate the sentiments Dr. Nagl expressed to the community on June 1. We stand alongside the Black and Brown Fords who are hurting, alongside a community and nation that is continuing its march toward justice and equality.

The Haverford School is imbued with the mission of producing men of character who adhere to our Principles of Community – not only during their time at Haverford but as they go out into the world. As the current leaders of the Board of Trustees, The Haverford School, and the Sixth Form, we want you all to know that we are personally dedicated to building an America that truly provides liberty and justice for all.

We hope that you enjoy Commencement for this wonderful Class of 2020, and know that you wish every member of this class a life of meaning and of purpose. May they each in their own way contribute to making our great nation a more perfect Union.
