I have enjoyed meeting many of you this fall and reacquainting myself with others, and I understand that choosing the right school for your daughter and your family is a big decision. Through various meetings, events, tours, and newsletters, I hope many of your questions have been answered as you consider Hockaday for your daughter. If you have not yet had a chance to visit Hockaday, we have a few more opportunities in December and January including campus tours continuing through May. In the meantime, please enjoy some Hockaday Highlights.
The Institute for Social Impact has been busy in the classroom and facilitating the service efforts of our students from every division this month. The second-grade students sold hair bands to bring awareness about the 844 million people living without access to clean water and plan to raise $10,000 from their sales to build a water-well in Kisumu, Kenya. Middle School girls are working toward their annual Holiday Bazaar fundraiser that will help benefit a special project at the interim home of Thomas Jefferson High School. The Upper School Choir recently performed at a retirement community, the AP Human Geography class is learning about agriculture and food deserts and visited Bonton Farms, and some of our Upper School students recently participated in a homeless simulation.
During the Lower School gathering on Monday, students kicked off the holiday season with special performances by the Lower School Orchestra and the Joyful Noises group. Currently, the Lower School is preparing for the Holiday Program, and the first-grade girls are excited to host the annual Holiday Tea next week.
In Middle School, the FIRST Lego League Robotics teams have already worked over 300 hours in preparation for competitions. The Hockabuilders won the 1st place Champions award at the Parish qualifier. The Daisies of the Future won 2nd place Champions award at their qualifier at Williams High School. Designer Daisies won 1st place Project for their car parking app and earned 3rd place overall at Williams High School. Out of the 55 teams that competed at these two locations, only eight teams advance to the championship in January, and three of those teams are our Hockaday teams!
Upper School girls will soon perform their winter Choral Concert and piano recitals, and Boarding students and staff are preparing to celebrate the holiday season with their annual ornament hanging ceremony and dinner. Finally, eight seniors signed their National Letters of Intent/Commitment Letters to play their chosen sports in college.
Though this is a small sampling of the recent activity at Hockaday, there is never a dull moment in our hallways or in our community!
All my best,
Maryanna Phipps
