University of New Orleans alumnus Michael “Mike” Jackson, an engineer who has managed multi-million-dollar construction projects, served as the principal speaker at the University’s fall 2024 commencement ceremony, which took place at the Lakefront Arena on Friday, December 13.

Mark Kostjuhin, Senior majoring in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering and Physics, was a winner in the Oral Category at InnovateUNO. Mark presented his research entitled "A Frequency Analysis of the Wave Response by the UNO Towing Tank Wavebreak."

Congratulations to Gazi Raihan, Ph.D. student in Engineering and Applied Sciences, Mechanical Engineering for taking First Place in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. The title of his presentation is "Sustainable Futures-Advanced Wind Turbine Blade Design by FSI and Machine Learning."

At StartupUNO, Arnab Bhatta, electrical engineering sophmore, and his teammate Sujit Mainali, a physics and mathematics sophmore, were the Runner Up Winners for the Privateer Pitch Competition. Their product "Windspark" is a small, portable kit that produces electricity from wind and solar energy and is designed for emergency power needs.

Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series Launched This Fall with
Mattei, Couvillion and Savoie

Launched this fall, our new Dean's Distinguished Lecture series is presented to Introduction to Engineering students. The program was designed to introduce students to big ideas early in their college education in hopes of inspiring them and retaining their talent. The lectures are also open to the public and have been well-attended by the Intro classes plus other engineering students, faculty and alumni.
