At our Spring Gala on May 1, Hebrew College will proudly bestow Rabbi Angela Warnick Buchdahl with the inaugural Rabbi David Ellenson Memorial Award, honoring an individual whose commitment to pluralism and ahavat Yisrael (love for the Jewish people) is evident in their labor and leadership. Rabbi Buchdahl has been with Central Synagogue in New York City for nearly 20 years, and, upon her appointment as senior rabbi in 2014, became the first woman to lead the synagogue in its 185-year history. Balancing innovation and tradition as a worship leader and organizational steward, Rabbi Buchdahl has navigated Central Synagogue through a transformative decade of American Jewish life. In 2018, Rabbi Buchdahl opened the doors of Central to the worshippers of a nearby Mosque which had been ravaged by a fire, reflecting her commitment to bridge-building and fellowship across lines of difference.

I have met so many fascinating students at Hebrew College. They range from younger folks in their late twenties, through new parents pondering the role of Judaism in the lives of their families, all the way through octogenarians and nonagenarians. Most striking for me has been to realize that these people, in little and big ways, are on their own quests. I feel honored that I have been able to be of some assistance to them in some stage of that quest. To see this dedication to searching for growth on the part of all of these very different learners, and to see also the kindness and mutual respect with which they pursue it, has often left me humbled, inspired, and energized.

SEVENTY FACES OF TORAH

It can be easy to forget, I think, because the weekly rhythms of our reading cycle can make its sections seem very discrete, that the Torah has all the merits of great literature: savvy plotting enriched by dramatic irony; sudden reversals yielding to grand reveals; distinct settings enlivened by significant details; circumstances that pose unanswerable moral questions. And, of course, all-too-human characters who make terrible mistakes. These are the elements, like foreshadowing, that bring a story to life, that cause us to feel as if we are inside the drama ourselves, feeling what the characters feel, living for a moment inside their experience.

Temple Emunah members visit “Reuven Rubin” Art Exhibit

Members of Temple Emunah in Newton, MA recently visited Hebrew College's art exhibit “Reuven Rubin: An Interpretation of the Story of King David” showcasing 20th century Israeli artist Reuven Rubin’s captivating lithographic series on the story of King David, an interpretation of the biblical character that transports viewers across centuries and continents. The exhibit runs through August 30. Soul Sounds: Beat Midrash with Neta & Stav

Hebrew College's Soul Sounds concert series kicked off with our first 2025 performance on February 26. Musicians and performance artists Neta Weiner and Stav Marin brought their unique combination of storytelling, dance, and accordian-powered hip-hop. They were joined by guest violinist Yuval Gur and Hebrew College Rabbinical School student and dancer Hadar Ahuvia (middle, right photo). Miller Center Week of Interfaith Photo Engagement

On February 24, Miller Center Director Rabbi Or Rose (left) and other attendees explored the theme of gratitude through a photography and dialogue exercise led by Dr. Roman Williams, director of Interfaith Photovoice, who visited campus late last month to celebrate the launch of his new book, "Sacred Snaps: Photovoice for Interfaith Engagement". Also last week, the 2025-2026 Miller Center Dignity Project Fellows celebrated the culmination of their learning together in a closing ceremony on Feb. 27. The ceremony also marked the opening of a photo exhibition in Hebrew College's Offit Room entitled “Seeing Through Our Eyes,” featuring images captured by the fellows as part of the photography-and-dialogue practice developed by Interfaith Photovoice (right).
