Pictures of the Week

Brebeuf Wins!
On April 5, three Brebeuf seniors - Chloe Levine, Jordan Smith, and Kate Snelling - participated in the local Battle of the Books competition which was held at Cathedral High School. Brebeuf fielded a team for the first time in many years. These three seniors emerged victorious and brought home Brebeuf’s first Battle of the Books trophy.
The Battle of the Books competition brings together student teams from both private and public schools in the Indianapolis metro area who enjoy reading as well as a little friendly competition. The books for this battle were selected from the 2017-2018 Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School Book Award Nominees. During the first round of competition, teams took individual written tests over the selected books. Team scores were averaged and the three highest scoring teams moved on to the speed round where they answered over 100 questions.  The Brebeuf Jesuit team was quick on the buzzer and had all the correct answers enabling them to establish and keep an early lead and bring home the first place victory.  Way to go, Braves!
This year’s reading list included:
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
Dumplin by Julie Murphy
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
The Boys Who Challenged Hitler and Won by Phillip Hoose
Call Me By My Name by John Ed Bradley
Paper Hearts by Meg Wiviott

Student Spotlight

MAX SIEGEL '18

Loves About Brebeuf
I love that Brebeuf allows us to find ourselves and to form our own identities. It’s hard to find a space where students feel comfortable to be themselves and I believe that Brebeuf is one of those places.
I love that Brebeuf requires us to do community service. I’ll admit that I was very reluctant to participate in community service, but that soon changed. Volunteering at the Christamore House soon became my favorite thing to do. I loved it so much that I volunteered there over the summer and still continue to serve there to this day. I’ve had so many powerful experiences there and I would have never encountered them if I was never pushed to do community service in the first place.
Favorite Class
My favorite class of all time is AP Environmental Science. I took this class junior year and I have never had a class interest me as much as this one did. In fact, this class actually helped me decide to major in Environmental Science in college. The class was so much fun to take, the labs we did were beneficial in terms of application, and the information that we had to learn was interesting in and of itself.
My favorite class that I am currently taking is Spanish 5 Honors. I’ve always loved the Spanish language and being able to speak it with other people almost every day makes improving easy. Learning vocabulary and other little grammar tricks comes really easily in this class because they come up naturally when watching or preparing to watch a movie that is in Spanish. Something else that pushes us to improve is that our hands are not being held. Aside from some grammatical mistakes, Srã. holds us to really high standards when it comes to the information that we talk about. You can look to earlier in the semester for an example of this. I gave a presentation and held a mini-discussion over euthanasia and the dignity of a human being. Throughout this presentation, we discussed this topic at the level and depth that we would have if we were speaking in English. Taking this class this year has made me want to either have a dual major in environmental science and Spanish or a minor in Spanish. I haven’t decided what I want to do with it yet.
Future Plans
I am going to play football at Notre Dame next year. After I graduate from college, I plan on going to law school to become an environmental lawyer.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Football
Wrestling Team Captain
Young Democrats
Black Student Union (BSU)
Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT)
Investment Club
Random Facts
I won the Circle City Conference Heavyweight Championship.
I love volunteering at the Christamore House.
I enjoy flying but hate the layovers.
I like to take pictures of nature.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc?
I have been watching a lot of the Showtime series A Season With. The show follows a college football team for a season. They have spent a season each with Notre Dame, Navy, and Florida State, and it’s been really interesting to get an extended glimpse of what I’ll be doing for the next four or five years.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and why?
I would travel to Japan in a heartbeat. I’ve always heard amazing things about Tokyo and would love to see it for myself. I am completely in love with the idea of going to a country where the native language is nothing like those encountered in the United States.
When do you leave for Notre Dame and what are you most looking forward to about your experience there as a student-athlete?
Freshmen report June 15 and I start summer school June 17. It’s been my lifelong dream to play football and go to school at Notre Dame and I’m excited to get up there. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of going to one of the best universities in the country while also playing for one of the best football teams in the country. I’ve always liked to be challenged and this will be my hardest challenge to date. I can’t wait to train and compete with people that are at the highest possible level for football. The last thing I am looking forward to is the atmosphere in Notre Dame Stadium. I’ve never felt anything like it and I know that it will feel much more intense being out there instead of cheering from the stands.
In what way have you changed the most since your freshman year?
I would say that I have become more aware and interested in making a difference when it comes to various social justice issues. I recently helped organize and promote our own walkout and I am proud that I was not only able to get involved, but to make a significant contribution as well. This is something that the “freshman me” would not even have dreamed of participating in or even paying attention. I would also say that I am more readily willing to use my voice and stand firm in my beliefs even when it may not be the “cool” thing to do.
