For many years, Rooibos has been used by people to help fight against cold and flu. Its unique antioxidant properties are what give the tea its edge in this regard. But, other than that, one of the most healing functions of Rooibos tea is that it helps the body to hydrate.
Someone who is ill usually loses a lot of fluids due to sweating (from a fever). When one is sick, one’s metabolism is also raised as the body’s internal activity level is increased as it fights the infection. This also results in a loss of fluids.
Rooibos tea, being caffeine-free, can help to keep the body hydrated and lock in desperately needed fluids in a sick person's body. In fact, the recommended daily intake of Rooibos is 6 cups!
Those suffering from cold and flu usually also have sore throats and other body aches. Rooibos can offer some relief here as well, as it has a calming effect on the body, which will help to release tension and sore muscles. As Rooibos has a relaxing effect on those who drink it, it can also help one sleep better, and sleep is essential in the fight against colds and flu!
So if you are feeling a little under the weather this winter, try some Rooibos tea to feel better!

It seems it's not only humans who have come to enjoy Rooibos as a delicious drink! A Gorilla who has been residing at the Johannesburg Zoo for the most of his life has celebrated his 35th birthday this week. Among some of his celebratory indulgences, he enjoyed a spot of Rooibos during the festivities as well!
Makokou The Gorilla is one of the most popular gorillas in South Africa. He recently shot to fame for undergoing a surgery to remove polyps from his nasal passage. He is only the second gorilla in history to undergo this operation and was flown to a special facility by helicopter for the surgery.
According to the zoo, they hand-picked a selection of healthy treats to give him on his birthday to speed up his recovery. We’re glad to hear that Rooibos is one of his favourite delights!

| Looking for an easy, yet delicious warm drink that you can make at home to help you brave the cold this winter? We’ve got you covered! With the recipe we’ve set out below, you can crack out amazing, cafe-quality Rooibos lattes right from the comfort of your own home. Give it a try today and share your results with us on social media!
What you need:
- Rooibos - loose or in tea bags. If using loose, use a tea filter
- Vanilla extract, milk, honey, cinnamon (optional)
- Saucepan with a spout for easy pouring
- Milk frother
- Glass mugs
Directions:
The Rooibos latte involves two parts. One for the Rooibos and one for the milk.
- Steep and combine all Rooibos ingredients in a saucepan.
- Leave it to bubble for at least 10 minutes on low heat.
- Next, in a saucepan, heat milk but be careful not to scald it. Simmer and swirl to prevent the formation of a protein skin on top. If you have a milk frother, you can use it for this step and create a nice, foamy frothed milk. Using a French press is another method. Hot milk is pumped with air and a good froth is produced by the French press, but If you hate extra washing up it's not a necessity!
- Now, take a large mug and fill one-third of it with the Rooibos mixture you created. You can also add honey and vanilla for an even more unique taste.
- The rest of the cup can be filled with the frothed milk.
- Top with cinnamon if you wish.
- Enjoy!
