What Kind of Rabbi Will You Be?

Community weaver, educator, author, artist, musician, organizer, pastoral caregiver, counselor, healer, caretaker, spiritual guide, community builder, prayer leader, farmer, peacemaker, tradition translator, interfaith collaborator…
When we asked our rabbinical alumni to describe their rabbinates, their responses were a reminder of the breadth and depth of rabbinic work — and how they each have taken their Hebrew College education out into the world to create a rabbinate that reflects their unique passions and gifts.

Teshuvah takes courage. Hebrew College Visiting Professor and evangelical minister Rev. Rob Schenck knows this firsthand. On Oct. 15, filmmaker Abigail E. Disney joins Schenck for a conversation about his personal journey of teshuvah in “Religious Leadership & Public Repair” at Hebrew College. Moderated by Hebrew College Miller Center Director Rabbi Or Rose, the conversation will include clips from Disney’s award-winning documentary, The Armor of Light, to explore Schenck’s evolution as a minister, his relationship with Disney, and their reflections on the need to forge relationships across divides.

Yom Kippur: Kavanah in 60
|
|
|
The Netivot Shalom, the chasidic teacher, has a very powerful teaching about Yom Kippur. He says the worst part of the Jews' slavery in Egypt was that the Jews didn’t even realize they were slaves. It was only the cry of the shofar from within themselves that awakened them to the fact that they needed to be free. The brokenness of the teruah that told them they were broken. And I think we're in that predicament today on Yom Kippur.

If we are willing to approach Unetaneh Tokef like Moshe—feeling our sorrow, and embracing our tears, perhaps this prayer can be a way to get close to grief without being consumed by it, to rehearse for loss rather than hiding from it. Perhaps it can allow us to acknowledge the harsh realities of the world, to voice our fears out loud, to lament that, “It’s not fair,” without letting our own lack of control overcome us. We may not control what will happen in the year to come, but we can allow ourselves the freedom to respond to that uncertainty with the honest emotion that it demands.

Hebrew College mourns the passing of Rabbi Herbert Rosenbaum, who served as Associate Dean of the College from 1971 to 1981. and was Assistant Professor of Jewish History and principal of Prozdor. Rabbi Rosenbaum formerly served as rabbi of Temple Emunah of Lexington (1959-1971), and after his time at Hebrew College, was a conservative rabbi in the Philladelphia area.
May his memory be a blessing.

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, Hebrew College held a special communal tefilah and celebration to honor Rabbi Van Lanckton `09 for his years of service to the College. As one of the first graduates of the Rabbinical School, Lanckton helped establish the Alumni Association in 2008 before we even had our first alumni! He will be stepping away from his role as the Executive Vice President of the Alumni Association but will remain involved and supportive of Hebrew College in many ways, including through his continued role on the Board of Trustees. Watch for more about Rabbi Lanckton in our next issue of Koleinu.
