Connection and Closure: Conflict Resolution with Peers
|
Messy roommates, inactive partners in a group project, insensitive friends––you’re bound to come across conflict with the people in your life occasionally, but conflict resolution strategies can help. Here are the Cleveland Clinic’s (non-exhaustive) lists of healthy and unhealthy responses to conflict:
Healthy:
- Calm, non-defensive, and respectful reactions
- Being able to recognize and respond to the things that matter to the other person
-
A belief that addressing the conflict directly is the best thing for both sides
Unhealthy:
- Inability to compromise or see the other person’s perspective
-
Explosive, angry, hurtful, and resentful reactions
- Fear and avoidance of conflict; the expectation of bad outcomes
Addressing conflict head on can be really intimidating, and you should feel proud of yourself for facing interpersonal problems before they get any worse. Click here for more information.
