Dear Tisch Community,
As we celebrate Pride Month, honoring the resilience and achievements of LGBTQIA+ communities, we also mark the 55th anniversary of the revolutionary Stonewall Uprising that catalyzed nationwide activism for LGBTQIA+ rights. While tremendous progress has been made, LGBTQIA+ communities still encounter challenges such as discriminatory legislation, hate, and violence, reminding us of the vital need to protect essential freedoms.
This month marks an important milestone in those efforts – the opening of the
Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC), the first LGBTQIA+ visitor center within the National Park System. The SNMVC will reunite and transform the iconic Stonewall Inn site into an immersive educational experience through exhibits, in-person and virtual tours, lectures, and arts programming in a dedicated theater space.
This groundbreaking center will preserve the legacy of the site while illuminating the ongoing work needed for future generations to experience inclusive LGBTQIA+ culture. This powerful shift extends beyond SNMVC’s walls, with plans to rename the nearby subway station
Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument Station in honor of this landmark.
As Greenwich Village evolves, we encourage the Tisch community to actively engage with SNMVC’s opening programs. The grand opening is on June 28th and entry to the public is free of charge.
