Radford University proposes New River Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities |
Radford University is proposing to be the home for the Commonwealth’s 20th Academic-Year Governor’s School, the New River Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. This school would start operating in academic year 2026-27 with a sophomore class of 40 drawing from nine eligible high schools:
- Auburn High School
-
Blacksburg High School
- Christiansburg High School
- Eastern Montgomery High School
- Floyd County High School
- Giles High School
- Narrows High School
- Pulaski County High School
- Radford High School
The school would add a junior class in academic year 2027-28, and a senior class the following year. Projected revenue is expected to come from the schools (60.6%) and the Commonwealth (39.4%).
The Planning Committee, headed by President Danilowicz, includes superintendents of five school boards, parents from the five school districts and the deans of the College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The committee has reviewed admission criteria, a sophomore course of study, likely humanities and arts courses and a three-year proposed budget.
The proposal for the New River Governor’s School will be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education in December.

October is Cybersecurity Month, consider a password manager
Passwords are often the first thing we think of when we think of cybersecurity. How often do you find yourself struggling to remember or reset passwords? How does that impact your productivity? A password manager is a simple, secure tool that stores all your passwords in one place, so you only need to remember one master password.
What does a password manager do?
| |
It automatically fills in login details for websites and apps, generates strong passwords, and keeps your personal information safer from hackers.
Here are some examples:
- Bitwarden offers free and premium versions, with the premium option costing $10 per year.
-
Dashlane provides a free version for one device and a premium version at $4.99 per month.
- KeePassXC is a free password manager that offers strong protection to securely store your passwords in a local database.
Struggling to remember or reset passwords can disrupt your productivity and increase your risk of security breaches. A password manager simplifies this by securely storing all your passwords in one place, allowing you to focus on what matters while keeping your information safe.

The Virtual Library of Virginia |
The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. VIVA is the academic library consortium in the Commonwealth of Virginia. All 39 state-assisted nonprofit public universities in Virginia are members along with 31 nonprofit private universities and the Library of Virginia.
| |
VIVA’s mission is: “As Virginia’s academic library consortium, VIVA builds an equitable, accessible and robust infrastructure of library resources and services for Virginia higher education students and faculty.”
It does this by using state funding to enable equitable access to resources and services across institutions as well as providing networking opportunities, training and expertise sharing. VIVA supports both students and faculty by providing a wide variety of resources.
Radford’s University Libraries benefit from VIVA in a variety of ways with e-resources being the most prominent, but also through resources sharing (interlibrary loan) and open and affordable initiatives such as the Curriculum Driven Acquisition (CDA) Program.
