Join us September 4-7, 2018 for Philanthropy Week!

Philanthropy Week is a fun, interactive way to celebrate the power of philanthropy at Brebeuf Jesuit. From Brebeuf’s 56th birthday on September 4 until Giving Day on September 7, we shine a spotlight on philanthropy’s important role in our community.  Want to join the celebration?  Here are three ways to participate:
  1. Give a Gift! Visit brebeuf.org/brebeufgives to make your gift online. Gifts received now through Giving Day on September 7 will be counted in our #BrebeufGives Philanthropy Week totals. Help us reach our goal of 200 Giving Day donors!

  2. Snap a Selfie! Post pictures in your Brebeuf gear and share on social media with #BrebeufGives.

  3. Share your Story! Tell the world what it means to you to be a part of the Brebeuf Jesuit community.
    #BrebeufGives
With Philanthropy Week just days away, we’re excited to celebrate one of our Giving Day donors, Beth Newman, a Brebeuf Jesuit College Counselor and proud current parent.
What is your role at Brebeuf, and what do you appreciate most about this role?
B: As a College Counselor at Brebeuf, I most appreciate having the opportunity to help students and their parents through the sometimes complicated college admissions process. I’m grateful to be able to help ease students' transitions and have a positive impact during a formative time in their lives.
What motivates you to give back?
B: Brebeuf has been and continues to be a positive change agent in so many lives.  It has shaped and inspired young people to do good for others and have a positive impact on the world.  It has also meant a great deal to me personally as it has been my work community for years.
Why do you encourage others to give?
B: I encourage others to give back to Brebeuf because I can’t think of a better place in which to invest for the positive growth and development of young people in our society.
Visit brebeuf.org/brebeufgives to learn more and join the celebration!

Picture of the Week

This summer, Brebeuf Jesuit became one of only four schools nationwide to be selected by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) school for the fourth consecutive time.
The RAMP designation, awarded for aligning with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, recognizes schools that are committed to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment.
RAMP certification is awarded to eligible schools on a three-year rolling cycle. Brebeuf Jesuit has been considered a RAMP school since 2008, and we are honored to yet again receive this recognition from the ASCA.

Loves About Brebeuf
Something that always makes me happy about Brebeuf is the size. Coming from a school where I had 500 people in my grade, I was really excited to downsize. Having a smaller amount of people around me has made me more outgoing and more observant. I am really proud to say that when I graduate, I will know every single person in my grade. That was something I promised myself I would try to accomplish over my four years here.
Favorite Class
My favorite class right now is Roles and Responsibilities of an Adult with Ms. Watko. This class is really trying to help us figure out who we are and what we want to do with the rest of our lives. Throughout the course of this semester we are going to go shopping and go out to eat, all to teach us the importance of budgeting. We will also take part in an etiquette business breakfast to teach us how to act professionally in a dining situation. There is also a section later on which focuses on our personal safety. The end goal of this class is to make sure we are ready for life after Brebeuf and life after college.
Future Plans
My college search has been narrowed down to the east coast, specifically North Carolina. I really fell in love with some of the schools there when my brother decided he wanted to attend High Point University, which is one of my top choices. Other than that, I am going to apply to UNC, University of Alabama, Le Moyne in Syracuse, New York, and some Indiana schools. I plan on studying some sort of science so I can go into the medical field.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Lacrosse (Freshman and Sophomore)
STRAP Club

Former Starbucks Barista

Random Facts
I have a paralyzing fear of spiders.
I’m a dog person.
My favorite TV show is One Tree Hill.
I love Will Ferrell movies.
I love country music.
I have known my best friend for 14 years, and our families met because we kept getting each others mail.
Where would you travel if time and money weren’t an issue?
If money weren’t an issue, I would ball out at Disney. This entails staying at the nicest hotel for about a month and renting out the parks so I wouldn’t have to deal with slow walkers or strollers. If for some reason I couldn’t do that, I would travel around Europe, because it’s on my bucket list and I’ve always wanted to go to Italy, France, and Spain to test my knowledge of a language I’ve taken since 4th grade and should be fluent in, but I’m not.
What are some small things that make your day better?
Seeing my friends is really high on the list of things that brighten my day. Something else I really love is when people say hello to me in the hallways and address me by name. I really appreciate cheesy jokes or funny noises that can keep me laughing all day long. Also, special shout out to Kaleigh Fitzgerald and Emily Matta who make my classes more entertaining.
So far, the best part of being a senior is...
So far the best part of being a senior is either leaving for lunch, because there are some really great food places around Brebeuf, or just the heightened independence. I like to have opportunities to prove that I am worthy of others' trust, and senior year is the perfect time for that.

Scholarship Announcements
The Wells Scholarship at Indiana University Bloomington is one of the most prestigious scholarships in higher education providing full tuition, mandatory and course-related fees, and a living stipend for four years of study. Academic and career mentoring, international experiences, summer enrichment, and membership in the Hutton Honors College are all part of the Wells Scholars experience, which combines the best features of a large research university and a small liberal arts college. Recent Wells Scholars had an average GPA of 3.9 or higher, SAT of 1400 or higher/ACT of 32 or higher, and rank in the top 5% of their high school classes, with significant contributions in extracurricular activities, leadership, and community service. You must be fully committed to attending IU Bloomington if offered the Wells Scholarship. If you apply binding Early Decision to any school, you are not eligible to be nominated.  Members of the Class of 2019 who are interested in consideration as one of Brebeuf’s two Wells Scholarship nominees should email Mrs. Jody Root (subject line: Wells Scholarship) by 3:15 p.m. on Monday, September 4. Include a detailed, updated student resume and an essay of 600-800 words responding to the following prompt:

Inclusion and Diversity Announcements
Many colleges and universities offer free Diversity Fly-In Programs to top under-represented, first generation, and/or diverse students.  Attending one of these programs can demonstrate strong interest in an institution, and potentially help one’s chances of being admitted. For more information about these opportunities, please click here.
On September 7, 2018, a representative from Purdue University's Krannert School of Management will speak with students to discuss their exciting Business Opportunity Program (BOP).  The undergraduate Business Opportunity Program (BOP) seeks the best and brightest high school students in the country and focuses on students of color who have an interest in the field of business. The program offers student participants scholarship funding, internships, academic tutoring, mentoring and professional development. Interested students should RSVP to Corey Pettigrew by Friday, August 31 at cpettigrew@brebeuf.org.
Spelman College invites students and parents to attend an information session on Tuesday, September 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Indianapolis Centre Hotel, 31 West Ohio St. Meet an admissions counselor and learn about the application process, scholarship opportunities, student life, and more.  If you cannot attend this event, Spelman College will also be attending Evening with Colleges at Brebeuf the next day, Wednesday, September 12 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

#BrebeufDrives

#BrebeufDrives will return next week with our first collection! For our fall drive, Brebeuf is partnering with the Newcomer Program.
The Newcomer Program is an IPS school serving students that are recent immigrants to the United States. This includes refugees and unaccompanied minors.  A focus of the program involves teaching academic English, as well as supporting the students' personal and emotional development.  Because so many of the students in the school lack basic necessities, the Newcomer Program relies on community partners to provide families with basic needs such as food and hygiene items.
This fall, we will be collecting toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and soap to donate to the students at Newcomer.
Donations can be left in Main Lobby in the collection box starting Tuesday, September 4 through Friday, September 21.

St. Luke Catholic Church Fall Fest

Brebeuf Jesuit is again sponsoring St. Luke’s Fall Fest!  This year's event takes place on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 3:00-10:00 p.m.
St. Luke's Fall Fest will include kids activities, an Adventure Zone, food, live music, bingo and a beer and wine tent.

2018 Ignatian Family Teach-In For Justice

Every year the Ignatian Solidarity Network invites participants from Jesuit high schools, universities, and parishes to participate in the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice. The event is a three-day learning experience to dialogue and strategize about ways to confront issues of injustice, poverty, and oppression both nationally and internationally. You can learn more about the gathering at http://ignatiansolidarity.net/.
Brebeuf Jesuit has a long tradition of sending delegations to the Teach-In. Applications to attend are now available in the Community Service Office.  Completed applications are due on Friday, August 31. Please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org with any questions.

Brebeuf Jesuit Mentorship Project

This fall, Brebeuf Jesuit will be renewing our partnership with Nora Elementary School for our Mentors Program. The program will pair high school students with students in third through fifth grade in need of a relationship with a mentor. Throughout the year, Brebeuf Jesuit students will take their mentees on both fun and educational trips around the city. We have found this service initiative to be an opportunity that tremendously benefits both the students from Nora Elementary and Brebeuf Jesuit.
Applications are available in the Community Service Office and should be returned to Mr. Klingler by Friday, September 14.
Please contact Nick Klingler with any questions about the program.
