GIRLS' NIGHT IN - April 21
(5 PM Saturday to 10 AM Sunday)
The Academy's senior women are continuing the tradition of hosting a Girls’ Night In, following its revival last year. First established by alum Gracie Hall (2012), Girls’ Night In is an opportunity for all of the women at The Academy to get to know each other better, boost each other's self-esteem, and have tons of fun. Activities will include movies, a potluck dinner, games, and bonding exercises. Seniors and faculty will provide breakfast in the morning, and each student is responsible for bringing her own pajamas, toiletries, and sleeping bag/pillows. The event will be chaperoned by female Academy faculty and staff members, and all female Academy students are welcome. Attendees are requested to spend the night, but in recognition of the fact that conflicts are a part of life, individual students should talk with Mrs. BZ if arrangements need to be made to participate without sleeping over.
Students who plan to attend should RSVP to one of the senior girls.
Please be in contact with Mrs. BZ or
Ella D. with any questions.

Students Rally to Protest Gun Violence in Schools

On the 19th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting, over 60 Academy students joined others across the country today by taking part in a National School Walkout to protest gun violence in schools. They are pictured here on the Greenfield Town Common, where some of them addressed the crowd.

50 Years Later: Reflecting on the Legacy of the Late 1960s

For their Exhibition projects this spring, the Juniors researched, wrote, recorded, and edited podcasts connecting an event, phenomenon, or movement from the late 1960s to our contemporary moment. Inspired by the many retrospectives and fiftieth anniversaries honoring the legacy of the turbulent late 60s, the students connected past and present to articulate what has changed and/or stayed the same over time. The vast array of topics they tackled is quite astounding!

To begin listening, go to this document where you will find the students' name, the titles of their podcasts, and a link to SoundCloud where you can listen. A brief description of the podcast will be available on the Soundcloud website. You do not need to create an account to listen.

ERDING-CHARLEMONT EXCHANGE 2018: A Great Opportunity!

We are looking for two Academy students and families interested in hosting two 10th graders from Erding, Germany, during the fall of 2018. Erding students visit us every year as part of the longstanding Erding-Charlemont Exchange. The American host students then have a chance – if interested – to go to Germany the following summer. The host families on both sides of the Atlantic are expected to provide room and board and are expected to show the student around the region. There is a $500 family stipend available to help defray related expenses. The Erding students will be here next fall from approximately October 22 to December 22.

Please take a look at the two brief bios of Charlotte and Marius and discuss this wonderful opportunity with your family. FYI: While preference is given to rising 10th graders, Academy hosts do not have to be in 10th grade.

Open Mic!

Come join us for a night of entertainment and performance, from musical bands to comedy sketches, brought to you by the Academy community! The Academy Open Mic will be held on April 27th (7-9 PM), on campus. Those wishing to perform (anyone cand do so; students, faculty, and even friends outside of school) should contact Katie T, Tucker Z-A or Nat B-O, or sign up on the sheet on "That Board" in the Common Room. All are welcome to attend, and we hope to see you there!

Aardvark Sports News, Week of April 16

Varsity Ultimate lost a tough game to Dublin 9-5 on Wednesday. Izzy B and Tucker ZA had great games for the Aardvarks, contributing to several scores and making several big defensive blocks.

The girls lacrosse team lost 15-4 to Bement on Tuesday. Ella D had a strong game on defense, while Abby S, Celeste D, Tess R, and Ella D scored for The Academy. On Thursday, the team survived a wet and cold game to win 13-9 against Pinecobble. Esme M-R and Ruby R moved off the ball well, and Emma F and Lizzie H led the offensive attack.
April is Grove Season
Time to purchase a yearbook ad for your graduating senior - or your business!
It's that time - time to purchase an ad for our yearbook, The Grove. All students have been assigned an ad to sell (or multiple ads -- returning students are given the same ad or ads that they sold last year, new students are assigned new customers). The sale of an ad generates a free yearbook for the selling student; students who do not sell an ad will be charged for the cost of their yearbook (approximately $15). Selling an ad, however helps to build community relationships with local businesses as well as to cover printing costs - students' participation in this goes beyond the benefit of a free yearbook.

Parents of the graduating class often purchase ad space to congratulate their seniors -- these ads count towards the free yearbook for the corresponding student. Parents who are business owners are also welcome to work with their student to purchase an ad. If you are interested in creating an ad for your senior or business, please review this link for details on sizes and specs, complete this ad contract and send it along with the ad to grove@charlemont.org, or send in a hard copy. Hard copies of ads or ad contracts, questions, and concerns can be directed to Nora Bates Zale. The deadline for ad sales is April 27.
2017 Community Service Day

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY 2018

Our annual day of service will be held on May 4. Student teams will spend the full day working with 8 different organizations to help support their work. This is a mandatory school day, and an opportunity to give back to our communities.

Students and faculty members will be as close as Charlemont and Shelburne Falls, helping seniors and others with spring yard work and cleaning including on the Bridge of Flowers, at the Buckland Recreation Area, in Memorial Hall, at the Tyler Memorial Library, and for clients of the Senior Center. Teams will also be working in Greenfield at the Green River Recreation Area, in Brattleboro at the INSPIRE School for Autism (founded by the family of an Academy alum), and at Prospect Meadow Farm in Hatfield. Their projects will be meaningful and they'll be making a difference.

Students should come to school in work clothes that day. The Academy will provide a short-sleeved t-shirt for each person to wear. If they have work gloves, please be sure to bring them. Individual teams may be asked to bring along rakes, shovels, garden tools, sewing supplies and rubber gloves. We will post this list in the Bulletin as the date gets closer.

Thank you for supporting this effort, and for honoring the spirit of our Founders who believed strongly in community service as a part of The Academy's program and ethos.

PUBLIC HEALTH NOTIFICATION

We have been informed by the public health nurse for our part of Franklin County that one of our students was recently identified as having a confirmed case of pertussis (whooping cough).  The student received appropriate treatment and there are no exclusions for them or any of their contacts. It does, however, remain important that all of us be watchful of any coughing illness in the school community. We encourage medical follow up where there is any persistent cough (cough greater than 2 weeks), cough with vomiting, cough with whooping sound or coughing fits.
