HDC Mid-Atlantic expands into NEPA

We were excited to welcome our NeighborWorks peer organization HDC MidAtlantic to Northeastern Pennsylvania last month at PNC Field before the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders game! They are expanding their footprint to meet the need for affordable housing in our area. They are going to help preserve five existing affordable housing communities in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties, totaling 153 apartments: Saint Catherine Manor Apartments in Scranton, PA; Saint John Apartments in Wilkes-Barre, PA; Saint Vincent Apartments in Plymouth, PA; Saint Stanislaus Apartments in Nanticoke, PA; and Saint Thomas Court Apartments in Hazleton, PA.
HDC is bringing new resources and investments to these communities as HDC received $400,000 in PHARE funding to make necessary capital improvements and ensure that these communities meet HDC’s standards of excellence. In addition, they will be offering on-site resident services to ensure residents can reach their full potential and thrive while living at an HDC community.
We are excited to begin collaborating closely with HDC MidAtlantic, to introduce them to the community at-large and identify ways that HDC can be helpful in meeting the housing need in our area. For more information about HDC MidAtlantic, check out HDC's website.

Staff attends NeighborWorks Training Institute

Three of our staff members, Gerard Hetman, Miranda Pace and Todd Pousley, recently attended the NeighborWorks Training Institute in Kansas City from August 15-19. They engaged in training relating to neighborhood revitalization and community development. This was an excellent event where staff members got to network with peers from near and far!

NeighborWorks featured in Comprehensive Community Development Learning Series

Jesse Ergott, President/CEO of NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, was recently featured on a national webinar hosted by NeighborWorks America to discuss the benefits of having a Comprehensive Community Development (CCD) approach to placemaking work in communities. CCD is a holistic approach to community work that recognizes the interconnectivity of communities and uses deep and abiding resident engagement to address needs that are identified. Using our planning work in the cities of Scranton and Carbondale as a background, Ergott shared how programs, services, and funding are leveraged for long-term impact in place-based efforts.

Clockwise from top left: PA State Rep. Bridget Kosierwoski; Brian Doughton and Amanda Shimko, PA Senator Marty Flynn's office; PA State Rep. Thom Welby; and PA State Rep. Kyle Mullins.
