From the Library
All overdue library materials must be returned by the end of first semester. While you are home over the winter break, take time to look around for long lost books, which may be hiding under your bed, deep in that pile of dirty laundry, or consorting with the dust bunnies. Bring 'em on home, please.
Polyglot
Our annual school-wide holiday celebration, Polyglot, falls directly before the winter break on December 18. All students are asked to contribute to the community dinner that we will share during Polyglot. Below is a list of food and task assignments for each grade. Contact Nora Bates Zale with any questions.

DC Trip during Spring Break
The Academy is offering a 4-day, trip to Washington, DC during Spring Break to all Academy students. The trip will offer students opportunities to see historical monuments, world-class Smithsonian Museums, and experience this culturally significant and unique city in the US. The cost of $500 covers all expenses, including meals, transportation, and hotel accommodations. A packet for parents is available by clicking this link. Forms and payments are due by January 12. Please contact Dr. Bloomfield with any questions.

I Will Not Be Diminished
Last week I spoke to Academy students and staff about the value of sharing our cultural, religious, and personal selves with one another. The following is a restatement of that reflection for your consideration.
There was a time, perhaps mythical, when Americans were expected to be different from one another: different culturally, religiously, personally, politically. There was a time, perhaps mythical, when those differences were thought of as a strength. I was raised with the notion that America was a Melting Pot; Jimmy Carter called it a Mosaic. Both images presume differences standing alongside one another. I still believe that the point of living next to people who are different from me is to learn about our differences, not to hide from them. I believe that in doing so, I become stronger, not weaker. I am not offended by people who believe differently than I do, I am curious.
This week some of our Jewish students have been sharing with us different perspectives on Chanukah; next week at our concert one band will sing a Christmas song; next Friday at Polyglot we’ll sing songs in different languages and cultures we study; our Dutch visitors weeks ago shared stories of St. Nicholas and the “black-face helpers” who visit homes in Holland each year. Some people in this day and age believe that we should be offended when such differences are shared. At The Academy we actively encourage and engage these personal stories.
I promise my students that no matter what they share of themselves with me, I will not be less for it, but greater. I invite them to do the same with others. If I hear a Christmas song and I am not Christian, I am no less of who I am for it; if I am an atheist and I hear someone praying to God, I am no less of who I am for it. And I promise everyone that no matter what I hear from them, I will be enriched, not diminished, by the sharing.

Concert DayTransportation
We will have a revised schedule on Thursday, December 17 to accommodate concert prep at Theatre 14 at Smith College. Students involved in the concert will depart from The Academy at 10:30 AM to prepare at Smith; all other students will help to prepare campus for Polyglot. Students going to Smith need to pack a bag lunch. Buses will depart from Smith at 3:15 PM, and performers must return to Theatre 14 by 6:00 PM. If your child has alternate plans after 3:15 PM, then the main office needs to know that ahead of time. Please e-mail Jen Rizzi to let her know if your child is either not taking the bus, or is going to someone else's house for the time between the end of concert prep and the 6:00 PM call.
If your children are not involved in the concert, they will be transported to Smith for the 3:15 PM buses, or they can be picked-up at the Academy between 2:00-3:00 PM.
Also please note that there is a dress requirement for the concert. Students should make sure to report in field-trip dress.
Concert Reception Treats Needed
On December 17 we will be enjoying one of the Academy's favorite winter events- the Winter Concert at Smith College!
After a few hours of amazing music we will gather for a celebratory reception outside the theater. Hundreds of people attend the concert, and the Academy Parent Council needs your help to feed them! Could you please bring cookies or other baked treats, seltzer or lemonade for the reception?
Please let either Monica Pulci or Ann Hallenbeck know what you can bring. You may drop off  your contribution on your way into the concert hall.
Thanks so much for your support of our student musicians! See you there!
APC meeting in Northampton
Please save the date for the next Academy Parent Council Meeting. On Monday, January 11 at 7:00 PM we will be meeting at the home of Kathy and Ben Osborne in Northampton. We will discuss this school year, plan opportunities to connect with other families, and get an update from Dr. Bloomfield. Hope you can join us!
Contact Phoebe Walker or Katie Boyd with any questions.

ACADEMY MARKETING COMMITTEE

The Academy is forming a working marketing committee. It's purpose will be to consider strategies and tactics to broaden awareness of and interest in our program. We're looking for people with new professional marketing or PR experience to invite to join the group. If you know of someone with this background who may have an interest, please contact Martha Tirk.
