University of Oregon
Dear Campus Community,
The process for setting tuition and fee levels for the 2018–19 academic year is underway and we want to ensure you are aware of the process, have access to critical information, and can easily find opportunities to participate in this conversation.
Accessing key data and information
It’s important to both the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) and university leadership that tuition-and-fee-setting is a transparent process and that students have access to accurate information about cost-drivers and other factors that go into setting tuition.
A reliable resource for up-to-date information on the cost of education, the tuition-setting process, cost drivers, and historical trends is the UO’s tuition website. The website tracks university efforts to develop a tuition plan that values excellence in teaching and research in an environment of limited state support. It outlines the major costs for academic operations, the critical investments that tuition helps fund, and the financial challenges the university faces.
You can count on finding regular updates about tuition and fees on this website, as well as through Around the O, social media, and in materials developed by the ASUO.
Tuition-setting process and opportunities to participate
The UO’s tuition rate will be determined by the UO Board of Trustees at their meeting on March 1–2, 2018, after reviewing recommendations from the administration. Leading up to this vote, students will have multiple opportunities to voice input through a public comment period, open forums, and Tuition and Fee Advisory Board (TFAB) meetings.
The recommendations that the Board of Trustees will consider stem from ones developed by the TFAB, a group comprising faculty and staff members and student representatives. The TFAB began meeting in October and will continue to convene through February to review and discuss relevant data and budgetary information to produce these recommendations. These meetings are open to the public and all students are welcome to attend. The full schedule may be found on the UO’s tuition website.
The president will post his recommendations and invite input from the campus community through a public comment period after he has reviewed the advice and counsel from the TFAB with the provost. These recommendations as well as information on how to submit input will be circulated to students as soon as they are posted next month.
Coming event for students
The ASUO is hosting the first open forum at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, in the EMU Ballroom. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to learn more, ask questions, and provide feedback to your TFAB representatives. This event will include a presentation on the UO’s current budgetary landscape and the cost drivers that the university needs to consider while setting levels for tuition and fees for the coming academic year.
We hope to see many of you on Tuesday and to hear from you throughout this process. As always, the ASUO is here for student questions or concerns regarding the tuition-setting process. You can make queries to the ASUO through the website or reply to this email.
Sincerely,
Amy Schenk
