Bridges Tocqueville Societies’ Joint Event

More than 100 Bridges Society and Tocqueville Society members recently gathered at Capital BlueCross Headquarters in Harrisburg for the societies’ annual joint event.

Event sponsor Capital BlueCross provided fantastic farm-to-table hors d’oeuvres, desserts and drink pairings. Guests enjoyed live music, a photo booth and the opportunity to network. Gary D. St. Hilaire, president and CEO of Capital BlueCross and chair of this year’s United Way campaign, spoke about United Way’s exciting new work. Tocqueville Society Chairs Diane Tokarsky and Steven Moore and Bridges Society Chair Jason Brown shared updates on both societies.

This event is a unique opportunity for Bridges Society members to connect with some of the most prominent leaders in our community. Thank you to Gary D. St. Hilaire and the Capital BlueCross team for making it a night to remember!
Holiday Bridges Networking and Volunteer Opportunity

The Bridges Society Networking and Volunteering Event in June was such a success that we decided to it again!

On Thursday, December 1 we will host another event combining networking and volunteering (location to be determined). Attendees will wrap books and write notes of encouragement for Downey Elementary School students that will be distributed in time for the holidays. A majority of the books and notes will be going to children who participated in our Barnes & Noble event last winter.

In preparation for this event, we are asking Bridges Society members to host book drives at their workplaces. If you are interested in hosting a drive or if your company would like to make a donation to purchase books, please contact Michelle Loomis at mloomis@uwcr.org.

You will receive an invitation with more details and link to register in the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Save the Date: Barnes & Noble Field Trips

Join us as a chaperone for United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society’s Annual Barnes & Noble field trip with Downey Elementary School. Three different third grade classes will have an opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the book store, read with their chaperones and purchase up to $15 worth of books!

The events will take place on January 31, February 1 and February 2, from 9:15-10:45 a.m. at Barnes & Noble in Camp Hill.  We will need approximately 20 volunteers each day. A link to sign up will be sent out in December.

Education is a priority area for United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society and these Barnes & Noble events are just one way we are striving to help children succeed.

A special thank you to Enterprise Rent-A-Car for sponsoring this project!
Volunteers Needed to Help Working Families with Tax Preparation

Volunteers are needed to offer free tax preparation to help working families receive the federal and state tax credits they are eligible for.

The service is offered through the Money in Your Pocket (MIYP) program, a community partnership led by United Way of the Capital Region that is committed to the economic stability of local families. In tax year 2015, 260 volunteers filed 5,332 tax returns bringing more than $5.1 million back into the community. The average return was $1,146. This helped individuals and families increase their income by an average of six percent.

No previous experience is required and training is provided. Volunteers are also needed to serve as greeters. Scheduling is flexible with daytime, evening and Saturday opportunities available.

For those interested in learning more, informational sessions will be held on November 9 at Goodwill Keystone Area in Harrisburg and on November 10 at Northern Dauphin Human Services in Elizabethville. For more information or to sign up, visit http://uwcr.partnershipplanners.org/openhouse
