Sustainability &
Community Programs

The Sustainability and Community Programs team hosted a members-only tour for UBC Botanical Garden Members. Hosted by Dr. Tara Moreau and Tamara Litke, members were given a sneak-peak at upcoming programs and events coming to the Garden.

As young students across BC were celebrating their last week of school, UBC Botanical Garden and SPEC hosted their inaugural class of the Sustainable Communities Field School. Designed to engage businesses and organizations in learning about sustainability in Vancouver, the Field School hosted employees from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society and Whole Foods on 4th Ave. during its first week. Staff were engaged in fun, hands-on learning about forest conservation, water cycling, and food systems all while team building with their fellow employees.

Taste of Terroir Dinner
Thursday July 16, 2015,  6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Join UBC Botanical Garden in celebrating the International Year of Soil and learn, first hand, about how soil and climate influence the flavour and quality of your food. To celebrate the terroir of our region, Chefs Alvin Pillay and Sarah Stewart of Vancouver's most iconic Canadian restaurant, Edible Canada, will be preparing a gourmet family-style feast featuring only the freshest locally-grown ingredients. Dinner guests are invited to sit back, relax and indulge in an outdoor evening of wine, music and decadence in one of Vancouver’s most beautiful hidden gems.

July in the Garden
Summer is a time for flowers. Public displays of flowers help soften and add colour to planters and borders, and make people feel good. We are happier looking at flowers. But it's not just our attention that flowers grab. Pollinators, thankfully, are also in the thrall of blossoms. Like people, pollinators have their floral likes and dislikes—although it's probably better to characterize these choices in terms of biological imperatives—and a flower's colour, shape, fragrance, as well as more subtle features, are a good way to predict how attractive it might be for a particular pollinator.

Shop in the Garden and Garden Centre
The Garden Centre continues to receive fresh shipments of Native plants and summer blooming perennials such as Canna, Rosa, Echeveria and Rudbeckia. Our yellow-tagged plants are volunteer grown and include favorites such as Rhodochiton atrosanguineus, a delicate Mexican climber with interesting deep-purple tubular flowers, best grown as an annual. For the bargain hunters, all fruit trees and Clematis are now discounted.
The Shop has a section of books on walks and hikes in and around Vancouver and appropriate pocket field guides to I.D. the plants you might encounter. The UBC Botanical Garden Seeds of popular perennials are terrific souvenirs for visitors who cannot take plants home. From our tool wall, the Dramm Revolver nozzle with nine settings is popular with our volunteers for perfect hand-watering. Cheerful plant-themed prints adorn our recent shipment of aprons, doormats, and melamine patio dishes.
With free parking and a relaxed atmosphere, the Shop in the Garden is ideal for thoughtful purchasing decisions. All profits from the Shop help support the Garden. The Shop is open 7 days a week, from 9:30am to 5:00pm.
Consider purchasing or gifting a membership to the UBC Botanical Garden to enjoy unlimited visits and a 10% discount on purchases year round.
