Fenwick Welcomes Back Students!
In-person physics students were socially distanced and separated by plexiglass dividers in a Fenwick classroom on
August 25. Their lab partners were at home, consulting with them over FaceTime on their mobile phones or Apple iPads.
On August 24th, Fenwick High School officially began its 92nd academic year with an in-person/remote-learning hybrid model. Students were warmly welcomed back to the Oak Park campus last week. Half the school is present on Mondays and Wednesdays, while the other half is eLearning from home. Classmates then switch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays are in-school "Freshman Only Days" for 2020-21.

KARINA BANUELOS

Fenwick Graduation: 2018
Hometown: Chicago
Grade School: St. Richard
Current School: University of Illinois at Chicago
Major: Pre-Med Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology

Summer Internship: I had originally planned to intern as a part of the “Women in Science” Field Museum summer program, researching plant and fungal interactions in their lab, but due to the ongoing pandemic, these plans had to change. Instead, I currently volunteer at the UI Health Hospital in the Inpatient/Outpatient Pediatric Center, helping children and their families before their appointments, reading to babies, and trying to bring the most fun, interactive engagements I can to patients, even with COVID limitations. Additionally, I volunteer in the Surgical Services Department of the hospital, assisting nurses by providing pre-op and post-op patients with warm blankets, informational take-home folders, and contacting families after surgery. This experience has allowed me to make connections within medicine and view firsthand the intensive work and passion these women and men put into what they love. I also had the opportunity of completing two neuroscience courses offered through Harvard University this summer!

FACULTY FOCUS: Italian Teacher Shawna Hennessey Begins Year 14 at Fenwick
Cappuccino, anyone?!
What is your educational background?

SH: After graduating from Lyons Township High School, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design with a minor in Italian from DePaul University. I later returned to obtain my Master of Education in World Languages along with my certification and endorsements in teaching Italian and Visual Arts.

What did you do prior to becoming a teacher at Fenwick?

SH: Before Fenwick, I taught English at L’Istituto di Istruzione Superiore Luca Pacioli, a secondary school in Crema, Italy. I worked in tandem with teachers of each subject matter to teach lessons on the content students were currently learning, but in English. In order to offer full English immersion to the students, I tried to pretend that I didn’t understand Italian, forcing them to converse only in English (my students at Fenwick might recognize this tactic ...“Non ho capito!”). It worked for a bit, until I laughed out loud overhearing one of their jokes in the hallway and my cover was forever blown.

WAYS TO GIVE
Class Reunions Have Moved to Spring 2021
The health and well-being of our community members is our utmost priority, so we have decided to postpone this year’s reunion for the class years ending in 0 and 5. We plan to host your reunion in the Spring of 2021. This decision was made with great consideration and takes into account several factors, including:

- The recommendations by local health departments to cancel large events and gatherings.

- The risk to the most vulnerable members of our alumni and faculty community, who are advised not to travel and avoid exposure to large groups.

While we would love to see your faces back at Fenwick, we cannot consider planning anything without putting your health and safety first. That is what’s most important. When we do gather again, it will be filled with incredible Friar pride.

If you would like to add your input on what you would like your reunion to look like, please email Alumni Relations Director Peter Durkin '03 at pdurkin@fenwickfriars.com. We need reunion committees for all classes!

Details will be forthcoming in early 2021.
51st Friar Classic Was a Success!
The 51st annual running of the Friar Classic Golf Outing August 14th was a huge success! More than 300 alumni, current and past parents, and friends of Fenwick enjoyed a beautiful day at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton. Alumni from every decade -- from the 1950s all the way to our newest class of graduates in 2020 -- came out to play.
The Bernacki Cup has found a new residence firmly in the hands of the Friars from the mid-'80s: Gene Sullivan '84, Tim Kenny '85, Frank Sullivan '86 and past parent Rich Hart won it by one stroke! The team of '75 alumni consisting of Mike Cullen, Kevin Collins and Mark LaRose came in second, and the team of John Byrnes, Dan Hennebry '68 and Peter and Elizabeth Mavrogenes '13 finished in third place.
