Getting to Know Your Roommate
Now that you’ve received your roommate assignment, we encourage you to reach out and get to know your roommate(s)!

Before Move-In
While preparing to move to your new on-campus home, it's a good idea to reach out and get to know your new roommate. You'll likely be spending a lot of time with this person for the next nine months!

Remember to keep an open mind. MSU’s campus is filled with a wonderfully diverse student population. And you'll likely be rooming with someone new to campus going through the learning curve of figuring out this whole college life thing and living away from home!

Are you living with someone you’ve yet to meet? Have conversations about their likes and interests. Try not to make judgments about your roommate based on your first conversation or social media profiles. Don’t worry if you’re nervous; they probably are too!

Here are some ideas:
  • Discuss the room and how you will live together.
  • Review what items each of you plan to bring so nothing is forgotten or duplicated.
  • Ask questions regarding their daily habits — what time do they go to bed; do they like to sleep with a TV on; do they tend to come home late; do they plan on having guests in the room?
  • Address which items you want to share and which you’d prefer not to.

The "getting to know you" process may take some time, but it can be fun. Kindness, respect and open communication goes a long way!
After Move-In
We recommend creating a roommate or suitemate agreement. Outline room and common area expectations and allow each person to voice their opinions. It is always a good idea to have a conversation about room expectations, even if you are living with a friend. Sometimes it is a surprising challenge living with someone you already know.

Don’t be afraid to express your feelings openly and create lines of communication from the start. If something is bugging you, talk about it early before it builds up.

Remember: Your resident assistant (RA) can help too! They can be a great resource to you as a sounding board, to mediate a conflict, or help you and your roommate develop the agreement.
Our Commitment

Reporting Harassment and Discrimination
Live On works hard to ensure all residents feel safe, secure and welcomed to the MSU community. We take incidents of discrimination and/or harassment very seriously.

The Office of Institutional Equity (OIE) reviews concerns related to discrimination and harassment based on age, color, gender, gender identity, disability status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, and weight under the MSU Anti-discrimination Policy (ADP) and Policy on Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM). OIE staff is available to provide information on the policies, connect MSU community members to resources, investigate complaints, and provide training.
