You can be the "other" Person
Observation is a superpower that many farmers may not realize they have. It is ingrained in their daily work lives. From noticing a sick animal before it has a fever to an early sign of insects on a crop, these early observations can mean early treatment and better outcomes.
Farmers can use this same skill to notice when their friends, family, neighbors, or employees are not themselves. Here are some signs you might notice when someone is struggling with their mental health:
A change in routines. While this might be hard to discern since COVID changed how we may gather, now that things are open again, have your neighbors started returning to coffee time or the 4-H meetings or church?
Increase in illness. Chronic stress can take a physical toll and impact the immune system, making it harder to fight off colds and other respiratory illnesses.
Appearance of farmstead declines. Is there a change in the way the farm buildings and grounds appear?
Care in livestock declines. Livestock may not be cared for in the same way; they may lose condition or show signs of neglect that are unusual.
Increase in farm accidents. Fatigue or lack of ability to concentrate can increase the risk of accidents.
Children show signs of stress. Children may act out or withdraw from activities; education performance may suffer, or they may miss more school days.
You’ve noticed things aren’t right; what do you do? It can be as easy as a phone call or text message. Ask how they are REALLY doing, and be prepared to listen. Show up during chores to help and talk. Invite the person to walk and talk. Or do a random act of kindness. A little gift of your time and attention can help someone more than you will ever know.
