BREAST Funding Success, with our NBCF grant selected for the Women's Day Classic 2022!

We are delighted to announce our funding success with the National Breast Cancer Foundation to secure some funding to further BREAST research.

BREAST colleagues and collaborators have been successful in obtaining an Investigator Initiated Researcher Scheme (IIRS) grant to investigate AI as a second reader/triage model for Breast Screening.

Furthermore, this grant has recently been selected for the Women's Day Classic 2022, which is 1 of 3 grants chosen to be highlighted for the event, raising awareness to where donations and research funds go towards.

BREAST platform upgrade complete!

A big thank you to all of our readers for being so patient while we upgraded the BREAST web platform last month. It is now complete after months of hard work preparing for it. This platform upgrade provides a more user-friendly experience. Rather than having to download the education test sets through a PACS system, you can now obtain access with just the use of high resolution monitors. Please don't hesistate to contact us if you have any issues using the platform.

Newsletter Feature Presentation: Dr Yun Trieu

Our very own BREAST research fellow, Dr Yun Trieu, gave a wonderful presentation earlier this year at the BreastScreen NSW Radiographer & Counsellor Symposium 2022. The study looks at lossless compressed images and next generation LCD as possible alternatives to the traditional mammogram-viewing workstations for training. BREAST Workshop in February a Success!

We hosted our first in-person workshop in Febrauary this year at our new home in Susan Wakil Health Building, The University of Sydney in Camperdown, NSW.

It was a wonderful success and a fantastic opportunity to meet some of our readers in person. Our 3-day event was completely booked out in all sessions, such a wonderful response.

We had many new faces attend this workshop, it’s great to see that we continue to expand our reach to new radiology networks and practices, welcome new registrars, as well as see readers return from previous workshops.

In summary, there were a total of 37 readers including 3 breast physicians, 22 radiologists and 12 radiology trainees participating the workshop with 36 completions in DBT Sydney and 11 completions in NT test set. Among the participants, there were 8 readers completing both DBT Sydney and NT test sets.

We look forward to hosting more workshops in the near future, with details below for RANZCR.

BREAST at RANZCR 2022

After two years, BREAST will finally be back to hosting our in-person workshop at this year's RANZCR meeting in Adelaide at the end of October.

We will be in operation for the 3 and half days there, with bookings essential to secure your session. We plan to introduce two new test sets at this workshop, more details to follow closer to the date.

BREAST Research News

BREAST represented at SPIE Medical Imaging conference

Our Director, Professor Sarah Lewis, travelled to San Diego in late February. BREAST had multiple conference proceedings and abstracts accepted at this year's SPIE Medical Imaging conference, a wonderful result!

Opportunity to volunteer for a BREAST study

Our research is always about conducting studies that aim to improve breast screening capabilities and experience. If you are in Sydney and are interested to give up a couple hours of your time, please get in contact with us via email as are looking for volunteers for two upcoming studies running shortly.

Study 1:

Compare the display of mammograms on a super high-resolution monitor with a diagnostic monitor. The findings will indication a cost-effective way for clinicians to establish a portable mammogram reading workstations for an online delivery of high-quality training and education.

Study 2:

Explore the effectiveness of individualised training test sets when applying intelligent algorithm support to readers who interpret screening mammograms. The AI will harness the weaknesses and strengths of individual readers and assign the readers to targeted training cases to enhance the diagnositc efficacy in breast cancer detection.
