UMKC Faculty Learning Community on Evidence Based Teaching Practices
Last year, CAFE piloted a Peer Observation program. Feedback from participants was very positive. Many of the participants in this program noted that it would be nice if there were resources that could be used to identify potential teaching strategies to improve teaching pedagogy. This faculty learning community was developed to address this issue. We will be focused on examining evidence-based teaching practices that improve student motivation and learning. We will investigate these techniques from the framework of the Expectancy-Value theory. The group will choose the techniques to review and pilot. We will have seven meetings throughout the 23-24 academic year resulting in a summary of practices that can be shared with our faculty and referenced during the peer observation process. Selected participants will receive a $500 stipend for their participation. Participants are expected to attend all seven sessions. Collectively as a group, we will select the days and times of these meetings. Meetings will be held in person and via Zoom, and each participant may attend up to three sessions remotely.

Mid-Career Faculty Learning Community
Mid-career faculty often find themselves at a place where future career goals are less defined and questions about how they want to spend their future in academia emerge. While there is no one definition of mid-career, it is often considered to be the period of time after one has earned promotion and/or tenure and before one starts to prepare for retirement. For many faculty, this is a significant number of years and is oftentimes the longest and most productive period of a faculty member’s career. Faculty often perceive the mid-career period as a time accompanied by both feelings of relief after earning promotion and/or tenure and increased workload and higher expectations. CAFE is sponsoring a faculty learning community (FLC) for those that consider themselves to be mid-career faculty at UMKC. In this faculty lead FLC we will discuss all things mid-career. We will have seven meetings throughout the 23-24 academic year resulting in an individualized plan for future growth and development. Selected participants will receive a $500 stipend for their participation and are expected to attend all seven sessions. Collectively as a group, we will select the days and times of these meetings. Meetings will be held in person and via Zoom.

Large Scale Proposal Development Workshop Series
Facilitated by Dr.Chris Liu and Dr. Alexis Petri, this immersive and enriching in-person workshop series is specifically designed for researchers seeking to apply for large-scale external funding. Spanning across the fall and spring semesters, our workshop series consists of four carefully curated sessions in each semester, meeting every other week. Each session is strategically designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to excel in grant proposal development. This fall, through interactive sessions, you will explore proposal ideation techniques, learn how to craft compelling narratives in research, gain insights into understanding the collective impact framework, and unlock strategies for effective team collaboration. Faculty members who actively engage in 7 of the 8 sessions will receive a $500 stipend or deposit in their research account, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a robust research community at UMKC.

Apply to Have Your Course Observed through the CAFE Peer Observation Program
The Peer Observation Program is in its second year at UMKC and will be conducted in both fall 23 and spring 24 semesters. This program is designed to promote teaching development through creation of a collaborative partnership between the faculty member being observed (the Observee) and a trained Observer. Observees can choose to identify a specific area of focus for their observation or ask for a more generalized observation.

Effective Feedback in Health Professions Education
The effectiveness of feedback relates to its double-barreled approach that focuses on both the cognitive and motivational aspects of learning. Both the tone and perceived intention of feedback affect how a learner incorporates and uses such information. Many clinical educators of the health professions are often underprepared for their teaching and feedback roles due to a lack of formal training in educational methodology. Join us for a panel discussion with representatives for four of the health science programs at UMKC, as we explore characteristics of providing effective feedback in a clinical setting.
Panelists:
- Kristin Lee-School of Nursing and Health Sciences
- Lisa Cillessen-School of Pharmacy
- Emily Hillman-School of Medicine
- Timothy Wezeman-School of Dentistry
- Lorie Holt—moderator CAFE
Date: Thursday, September 14th 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Faculty Writing Initiative
Looking for dedicated time and space to write this semester? CAFE is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Faculty Writing Initiative, which is designed to support faculty in achieving their academic and creative goals through work on writing projects of any kind—such as grant applications, book chapters, articles, essays, creative work, conference presentations, etc.
Launched in Spring 2020, the Faculty Writing Initiative (FWI) offers weekly online writing sessions so that faculty can make substantial progress on their writing projects. Each session begins with goal setting and ends with progress check-ins and brief discussions about writing strategies, to bring structure and a sense of community to the solitary work of writing. Many faculty who have participated in the FWI have noted that there is a sense of camaraderie that forms through individual writing in a group environment. The Faculty Writing Initiative is different from a typical writing group in that it supports faculty in building writing time consistently into their weekly work schedules. Facilitators and participants will not be reading and responding to each other’s writing, rather you will encourage each other in building sustained writing practices.
Faculty across all ranks, including non-tenure track, are encouraged to apply, and applicants can apply to participate in either a Tuesday morning session (10:00 am to Noon) or a Friday morning session (10:00 am to Noon). Both sessions will meet via Zoom. The weekly meetings will begin the second week of classes, and participants will be expected to attend these weekly writing sessions throughout the semester.
In you're interested in participating in the UMKC Faculty Writing Initiative, you can complete an online application by August 25, 2023. Applicants will be selected to ensure that the Faculty Writing Initiative serves writers from all disciplines and across all ranks in university.
Facilitators for the Faculty Writing Initiative will be Dr. Antonio Byrd , Assistant Professor of English and Dr. Jane Greer, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. Both Drs. Byrd and Greer focus their research and scholarship on Writing Studies and Rhetoric and have enjoyed considerable success as writers as well as their fair share of writerly frustrations, anxieties, and disappointments. They have both participated in a variety of initiatives and workshops designed to support faculty writing, and they are eager to write with other faculty.
If you have any questions, please email Dr. Byrd or Dr. Greer.
