Your Impact: Student Scholars
|
This year’s student scholars shared poignant final reflections on their SYA experience, highlighting profound personal and academic growth. Many recounted how the immersive environment enhanced their language skills and deepened their cultural understanding, fostering a newfound appreciation for global perspectives. They spoke about the challenges they faced and overcame, from adapting to new educational systems to navigating daily life in a foreign country, which ultimately bolstered their resilience and independence.
Overall, their reflections conveyed a collective sense of gratitude and a recognition of the transformative impact of SYA on their future aspirations and worldview. The generous support of the SYA community makes these experiences possible for our students. If you haven’t made an SYA Fund gift in the 2023-2024 year, please consider doing so before June 30.

Remembering Carlos Alvarez:
Visionary Leader, Dedicated Philanthropist and SYA Champion
|
|
|
School Year Abroad lost a dear friend and a vital champion of its mission when Texas entrepreneur Carlos Alvarez died at home, unexpectedly and in his sleep, on April 9, 2024. He was 73 years old and still, seemingly, in the prime of his life.
An advocate of cross-border education since his own experience as a young student in Michigan, Carlos came to know SYA in 1999 when his daughter Carla attended SYA France. A campus visit that year prompted Carlos’ first gift to SYA — an unsolicited one — to “spruce up” the Rennes school building. Many more followed.

| There's still time to make an impact!

The SYA community makes scholarships possible for nearly half of its students each year through the SYA Fund. We need to raise $200,000 more to reach our goal of $1.3 million by June 30. As you read through the scholar reflections above and the Campus Storyteller posts below, will you consider making an SYA Fund gift this year?

Our Campus Storytellers shared some last words before leaving France, Italy and Spain. Some of Natalie's most meaningful moments were the spontaneous whirlwind weekends and day trips with her French family. Casey wrote about having 10 more days: that’s nine more cafe con leches and morning hellos with her favorite barista; two more host family lunches discussing the most random topics for hours; and one more trip with the whole school to celebrate their year.

SYA will celebrate our 60th year with events in Barcelona (April 25-26) and
Zaragoza (April 28-30) and we hope you can join us!
We've gotten some great responses for event activities and what sorts of things fellow SYAers want to learn about. If you haven't filled out the survey, please take five minutes to let us know what you are interested in participating in, reading, learning, attending, etc.
