Victory for Clean Water in Gallatin Coal Ash Lawsuit
TVA Gallatin Fossil Plant
On August 4, a federal court in Nashville ruled against the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in a lawsuit over groundwater contamination from coal ash pits at TVA’s Gallatin Fossil Plant. U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw ordered TVA to excavate and relocate coal ash from a leaking, unlined pit to a dry, lined location. TSRA and the Tennessee Clean Water Network filed the complaint against the TVA in April 2015, alleging that the Gallatin coal ash pits leaked into groundwater and the Cumberland River, violating the Clean Water Act. This event benefits the Cumberland River Compact. Every $100 raised will help clean 20 linear feet of stream in the local watershed and help ensure the Compact can continue advocating for a safe, clean Cumberland River.

Submit Your Comments to the EPA on the Clean Water Rule Repeal by August 28
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Army have proposed withdrawing the Clean Water Rule, which protects drinking water sources for one in three Americans. According to the Harpeth Conservancy, 55% of Tennessee residents get their drinking water from sources that rely on small streams that are protected by the Clean Water Rule.
Read more about the Clean Water Rule's effect in Tennessee on the Harpeth Conservancy website and submit your written comments to the EPA by August 28. Help safeguard our rivers and streams and protect clean drinking water sources!
