Dear Cathedral Family,
“I believe in youth. I believe in youth with all my heart and with all the strength of my conviction. And today, I say: I believe in the youth of Ireland! I believe in you who stand here before me, in every one of you.”
Pope John II delivered those words with gusto and sincerity to the youth gathered to see him in Galway, Ireland, in September of 1979. I was beginning my second year as a college student then, and for those of a similar age, I cannot believe that over 43 years have passed since that date! In that time span, so much has changed in our society and for our youth. The internet, cell phones, social media, and amazon.com are just a few of the highlights (lowlights?) that have come into existence since then. Parenting has become exponentially more challenging, and being a young person has grown much more difficult as well. Despite all of that, I still believe in my heart in the words of Pope (now Saint) John Paul II. Our young people consistently rise to our expectations; the more we ask, the more they do. However, they will also reach the lowest depths available if we tell them how little we expect of them. Our mission statement is profound in sharing our motto, our core belief:
Cathedral, a premier Catholic high school in the Holy Cross tradition, transforms the hearts and minds of a diverse group of students to have the competence to see and the courage to act.
These words are intentionally bold; we are diverse intentionally, in the spirit of the Founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Blessed Basil Moreau. Our mission is to transform our students individually and as a GROUP (and a diverse group at that.) We call this group a Family, which is one of our Core Values. And by adding our motto of Greatness is Calling, we put a stamp on the high expectations we have for all students, as one Cathedral Family, to do the very best in all they do. We show this consistently in the classroom, in the theatre, during our Service Day, on the field, or on the court, and we will deliver it again during Christmas on the Hill, held for the first time on the Hill on December 8. We could not do this work of transformation if we did not believe, with all of our hearts, in our young people. We also could not do it without the generous support of our donors. As we close out 2023, we humbly ask you to consider an end-of-year gift by clicking here. Your support ensures we can continue fulfilling our mission. Thank you.
As we begin the Advent season this Sunday, I want to assure you that we are holding closely to the bold and intentional words of our mission. As we wait in joyful anticipation for the celebration of the birth of our Savior, our faithful work continues. May we all be transformed this Advent, and if you have the chance, tell a young person that you believe in them. It may be the most meaningful gift you can give!
Faithfully,
Rob Bridges, PhD
President
