From the Museum

As Winter Break approaches, we say "good bye" to two interns. Research Assistant Intern Jonathan Cambouris, graduates with his M.A., in History. He intends to pursue his interests in Mediterranean studies and the conservation and research of historic artifacts, by developing two of his projects into articles. They are on the Italian Occupation of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece, and the cultural influences of wax seals in the Western Reserve. Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association Intern Mallorie Sutter, graduates with her M.A., in History. She plans to remain in Youngstown through the spring and will volunteer her time in the archives as well as research job prospects in the museum field.

Looking Forward to 2021

January will be an eventful month here at the museum.

We release our new website on Januaray 15. The website will be a place to see current and past exhibits, view artificats in our collection, meet our staff, and much, much more!
The Spring Speakers' Series, sponsored by the Charles Darling Endowed Chair in American Social History will begin with on-line presentations of historic topics relating to pandemics.
The History Across the Humanities Conference, HATH, will hold its event on-line in February. This conference, usually held at the museum, allows undergraduate and graduate students to present their research at a conference of their peers as well as learn new skills, discover job opportunities in the field, and meet students from the tri-state area. Keynote Speaker is Dr. Mikaela Adams, associate professor of Native American history at the University of Mississippi. She will discuss the 1918 pandemic in “A Veritable Nightmare, Pitiable and Harrowing beyond Degree:” The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1920 in Indian Country."

1946 BACK TO OUR FUTURE…….

In 1946 the Mahoning Valley and its steel industry could look back on a prolonged period of Depression doldrums and wartime urgency. As the distinguished economic historian, William T. Hogan, S.J., noted in his five-volume history of steel, "When the war ended in 1945 and the country began to adjust to peacetime prosperity - and not the widely predicted 'Depression of 1946' - a new era had indeed arrived." Novel conditions included unprecedented national collective bargaining among steel employers, the United Steelworkers of America and the federal government which prefigured developments over the next four decades. School groups touring area mills viewed steelmaking with hope for its future - and theirs. YHCIL will recognize the 75th anniversary of this transitional year by periodically presenting information through social media and other formats.

The Archives Library remains closed to the general public due to the current pandemic. If you would like to conduct research, please email centerofindustryandlabor@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.

Rentals

Did you know that you can rent the museum for your next function?

Rental charges: Not-for-profit groups $75 per hour and for-profit groups $125 per hour. What do you get? Meshel Classroom, hire a caterer, bring in your food, or order pizza. We provide the tables, chairs, black table clothes (if desired or you can rent other colors), and a free guided tour of the museum. ½ hour set up and ½ hour clean up added to cost of rental (that means you need to pay for an extra hour to allow for set up and clean up). Easy access, free parking and on-street parking, handicapped accessible.
