Dr. James Grover Appointed as
CONHI Interim Dean
|
On June 1, Dr. James Grover, Dean of the Graduate School, assumed the role of Interim Dean for the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at The University of Texas at Arlington.
He is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology and directs UTA’s participation in the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL); a national network comprising more than 40 research universities.
Since joining UTA in 1993, Dr. Grover has held a wide range of faculty and administrative leadership roles. His service includes appointments as Associate Dean and Interim Dean in the College of Science; Interim Dean in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs; and Interim Vice President for Research.
Dr. Grover earned his Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science from Purchase College, State University of New York in 1982, and his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Minnesota in 1988. He completed postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Limnology in Germany and at Imperial College Silwood Park in the United Kingdom.
With an extensive background in teaching, research, and academic leadership, combined with deep institutional knowledge, Dr. Grover is uniquely qualified to lead the College of Nursing and Health Innovation during this transitional period.

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the Council for Accreditation of Healthcare Simulation Programs has granted accreditation in the area of Teaching/Education to the CONHI Smart Hospital Simulation Program.

The annual Moritz Chair in Geriatrics seminar was held on June 3. This seminar is designed to highlight research related to aging in both health and disease. This year's featured speaker was Jaume Padilla, PhD, FAHA, Professor, Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, University of Missouri, who delivered a presentation titled "Physical Inactivity and Increased Vascular Disease Risk." Dr. Padilla focused on the detrimental effects of prolonged sitting on peripheral vascular function and strategies to avoid the negative consequences of uninterrupted sitting for extended periods.

Fifth Annual "Family Fit Fest" Held April 26 at The Shops at RedBird

For the fifth consecutive year, the Community Council of Greater Dallas hosted the Family Fit Fest on Saturday, April 25, at The Shops at RedBird in Dallas. The Complimentary health and wellness fair was designed for the entire family and included fitness activities, giveaways, health screenings and immunizations. More than 2,000 attendees turned out for the event.

Sohyun Kim has been selected for 2026-2027 DEM-PCCT research scholar. Her research focuses on leveraging technology-based interventions such as video chat, wearable devices, virtual reality, and home monitoring to improve the quality of life and care for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

Honorary Life Member for Texas Public Health Association

Congratulations to Dr. Melissa Oden, a CONHI Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, who was awarded Honorary Life Member for the Texas Public Health Association this month at the 102nd Annual Education Conference. "It's one of the two highest awards that is bestowed on a THPA member, and I just couldn't be more thrilled!" said Oden.

NFL draft reportedly coming to Minneapolis: As part of its NFL draft coverage, Minneapolis TV station KARE 11 reported on the complex safety precautions cities must take to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of visitors. For that, they brought in Adam Annaccone, a sports medicine professor who specializes in these matters. Dr. Annaccone wrote about the topic in April for The Conversation when Pittsburgh hosted the NFL draft.

Dr. Marion Ball has travelled in May presenting at Medical Informatics Europe 2026 (MIE). The topic: Bridging Artificial Intelligence with Human Intelligence: The Ingredients of Augmentation. Other presenters included Hübner, U., Phipps, L., and Delaney, C.
Dr. Ball also participated at Texas Health Resources (THR) Analytics Day earlier in April -- Research Initiatives at UTA. As the moderator she engaged the panel presentations of Johnson, M., Hernandez, D., Tietze, M., and Clements, E.
