New beginnings, new people, new experiences –all of these put our nervous systems on high alert. As a result, our bodies produce more adrenalin and stress hormones which impact our energy level, appetite and sleep. For some, these changes feel like stress and for others, excitement, but they are essentially interpretations of the same biological processes. If you experience these physical changes as anxiety or stress, try:
- reminding yourself that it’s your body’s way of getting you ready to meet a new challenge and look for positive ways to use this energy.
- taking breaks to rest, digest, and heal –exercise to burn off some of the adrenalin, rest to let your nervous system recoup, and eat regularly, giving your body healthy fuel and energy.
We know that this year will be different. Make sure to look after your wellness and mental health this academic year.
