To the Southwestern Community,
I am writing to inform you of a deeply troubling incident that occurred on Sunday, Nov. 20, in Ruter Hall. SUPD received a report of a noose hanging on a restroom door. Officers responded immediately and an investigation is underway. Anyone with information regarding this incident, whether or not they were directly involved, must immediately contact SUPD at 512-863-1944. Everyone has a duty and a responsibility to intervene if they see harm occurring or about to occur. Reporting such a heinous act is a moral and ethical responsibility. Officer patrols have been increased, and there will be more frequent walk-throughs as well as an increased officer presence.
It cannot be stated strongly enough that a noose is a horrendous historical symbol of anti-Black racism, violence, and murder that will not be tolerated at Southwestern University. The Southwestern community has no place for anyone who perpetrates such despicable acts. Those found responsible for bias-related incidents or harassment will face serious disciplinary action including possible expulsion from the University.
This recent event follows an earlier hate incident this fall where anti-Semitic signage was placed on campus. Security cameras captured an image of an individual on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing a helmet, affixing vile signage onto light posts. It is believed that the individual was not connected to the University. The posters were immediately removed and students were notified.
As a community committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, incidents like these demonstrate that we have much more work to do to care for and protect each other. Our mission is education and it is everyone’s responsibility to increase awareness and understanding while we, together, reject such senseless acts. A series of community conversations are being organized in order to inform, educate, relate, and reach out.
Student Life is here to support students, faculty, and staff affected by this incident. We encourage anyone to contact the SU Counseling Center at (512-863-1252), the Dean of Students Shelley Story (512-863-1281), the Director of Student Inclusion and Diversity Dr. Malissa Ismaila (512-863-1342), and the Chaplain & Director of Spiritual Life Dr. Ron Swain (512-863-1959) for additional support.
